Firefox 6 greys out the URL in the address bar, except for the domain, which is cool (despite some people thinking otherwise).

Wow what an original and creative new... oh wait they stole it from IE and Chrome.

Has anyone offered any sort of reason for such odd behavior?

It's meant to convey to dumb users which part of an url like https://webinterface.yourbank.com/accountstatus@home.banking.shadysite.ru?pr0n=1 is the real server. Of course, dumb users don't look at it anyway. I like what this firefox extension does, higlkighting querysting and so on. I hate what all modern browsers do by default, that is hiding http:// from front.

That's what I thought at first. But then I pondered: is that really useful information? Do I not know it is there? I see absolutely no good reason I can see to have it. It just takes up space. If all protocols were hidden, that would be confusing. But http, https and file can be hidden without confusing me in the least (note that https comes with a nice green "secure" notification in the same area). So I used a userstyle to hide them. I also hide www. if present. It's just information I don't care about.

Do Firefox users even know how far behind FF is in pretty much every way right now? Or are they just coasting on the "Firefox is new and shiny" vibe from 4 years ago? When IE is kicking your ass on features... uh maybe you have a problem.

I'm on Firefox, and been meaning to change since about when 4.0 was released and they started changing random things for no reason (like the UI and version numbering system). But I can't be bothered finding a decent replacement not made by Google.
