High-tech building + no smoking = ...

They banned smoking at the workplace (at least, inside the building) here in the Netherlands some time ago. This includes a café, restaurant or bar, as they have employees as well.
So now truckdrivers are trying to find a loophole (and going to court about it) so the can smoke in the cabin of their truck. And yes, they are indeed the only person sitting (or probably even ever coming) there, 8 (+ overtime) hours a day. I can't really blame them. What non-smoker are they pestering, sitting there all by theirselves in the cabin trucking from A to B?
Other than that (and probably other "I'm the only one ever coming here, let me smoke if I want to!" jobs) I'm happy they banned smoking from the workplace, as I don't have to sit in the smoke all day long. I'm quite used to it though, as both my parents smoke a lot, I just prefer not to have to be in the same room.

This whole thead is stupid and so are most of you. I have made a nice list to summarize:
- Smoking is bad for you, but so is just about everything fun, like drinking and drugs and sex and coffee and so on. We all are going to die someday so what I choose to do with myself is none of your fucking business so long as it does not directly impact your ability to do what you want with your own self.
- I have to wonder how many of the people on here who are bitching about smokers engage in dangerous activities. Given obesity rates, I'm going to guess at least 25% of the anti-smoker whiners are fatasses who will probably drop dead long before me. Also, alcohol kills more people than smoking and cars more than both combined. Pollution from industry, additives in food, red meat, car exhaust, etc... are all killers. Grow the fuck up and accept that you will die someday.
- Nobody should be forced to breathe in another's smoke, so smoking in public buildings should be illegal. However, private businesses, bars, etc.. should be able to decide what they will permit inside their doors. If I want to open a bar and allow smoking, that's my fucking business. I own the bar, I take responsiblity for its upkeep and I take the risk of losing business. Personally, I would not permit smoking in a bar, restaurant or office I owned but that's still my choice to make. If you don't like what someone else does, then do something about it, but don't go crying to the government so they will put a gun to my head and make me do what you want. That kind of attitude makes you a whining shithead.
- Blowing smoke into someone's face is shitty but whining because you got a whiff of smoke while walking past a smoker is the epitome of being a crybaby bitch. Look, smokers saturate themselves with this shit every 20 minutes for years before it causes serious harm. A tiny bit of second-hand smoke mixed with outdoors air is no threat to your health. Hey, you can even dislike it, but keep your opinion to yourself. I hate people who wear those goddamn "Crocs" shoes or who wear t-shirts or buttons with lame-brained political statements but I act like an adult and keep my opinion to myself.
- I don't think there is any smoker out there who doesn't know smoking can be harmful. Bringing it up doesn't make you look clever or healthy and none of us are impressed with you. Some people are addicted and it's hard for them to quit, but they can if they have to. The fact is, people choose to smoke. I can quit very easily but I like having a few cigarettes during the day and I am young and extremely healthy so I am willing to take the risk. Pointing it out just makes you the most annoying kind of self-righteous prick, though. Yeah, they're motherfucking "coffin nails" and "cancer sticks", we know. How would you like it if everytime you got into your car I shouted "Hey, hope you don't get disemboweled in that ton of sharp steel and glass moving at a high velocity!" or reminded you that the iPhone in your pocket may be giving you testicle cancer or that going for a jog might get run over by a drunk driver? I mean, really? It would take a real obnoxious piece of shit to constantly remind people of all the little risks they are taking in their day-to-day actions, yet somehow this is okay to do to a smoker. It's not going to make us quit (in fact, most smokers will probably smoke more) and it diminishes the joy we get out of smoking. So not only are you encouraging people to smoke when you remind them smoking is bad for them, but you suck whatever joy it gives them out of the experience. Thanks, assholes.
- Nobody is equal. All people are individuals. Employers pay employees to work. Some people are smarter, faster, better. Some people not so much, but they get along. Some people take 20 minute smoke breaks, some sit and work all day. The smoker might be a far more valuable employee than the workaholic, though. Your employer pays you what you are worth to the company. If an employer feels that his or her employees are worth less because they smoke, then that is his or her judgement call. If your employer doesn't "crack down" on the smokers, maybe it is because they really don't give a shit. Or maybe they do care but you are so incompetent that they feel you need to work more than your smoking coworkers to earn the same salary. If you have a problem, bring it up with your boss, don't make broad proclamations about how you are so fucking put-upon because some coworkers take breaks and you don't.
- If an employer wants to ban all employees from smoking, that is their right. Even if it is in their personal life. They are paying you and if the job is worth it, then you will do what they ask. Personally, I'd never work for a prick like that, but that's just me. If any employer doesn't want to hire gays, blacks, smokers, non-smokers, non-native English speakers, whites, Catholics or whatever, that is their fucking choice.
- Smokers pay taxes like anyone else. If you had reasonable, free-market insurance then you can be damn-sure the actuaries know how much more smoking costs and take it into account. If you have public health insurance, then paying for smokers is kind of the whole fucking point. Socialized medicine is meant to spread the risk regardless of personal factors. Supposedly it's "wrong" to refuse top-notch (well, considering socialized healthcare "middle-to-lower-notch") healthcare to someone if they made some bad economic decisions and cannot afford free-market insurance, but if that same person decides to smoke then holy fuck we better not let them abuse the system. Abusing the system (and being abused by the system) is the point of socialism, people. If you don't like it, toss your awful leaders out on their asses and implement free-market reforms.
- For the record, every study I've ever seen says that in the US smokers are a net benefit healthcare-wise. That's because smokers tend to die younger than non-smokers and the diseases they contract kill them more rapidly. Smokers pay into Social Security, Medicare, life insurance and health insurance, but how much do you really think they get out of the system? If you want to look for the real expenses look for people who survive into their late-90s and require two decades of expensive treatment as their body slowly, naturally falls into rotting pieces. Acting like the biggest burden on our healthcare system are the folks who are diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 59 and drown on their own pus and blood a mere 4 months later makes you sound like an asshat.

Does breathing second hand smoke cause deep psychological problems for the victim for the rest of their life? Do smokers often murder their victims after they breath in of their second hand smoke? Are you unable to sleep after breathing in SHS? Do you experience nausea and loss of apetite? Do you have mood swings for weeks afterwords? Honestly, if you think second hand smoke is bad for you then there is plenty of evidence that you can offer to support that theory. However, this comparison is beyond hyperbole.

1) We all die and there's no guarantee a smoker will die before you will. Given that most people die of non-smoking causes, it's silly to assume you will outlive smokers.
