I don't know about Windows, but this is a real thing on macOS
I had my old mac take a hard crash because it couldn't ping their server for 120 seconds. Fuckers. It's a really old/slow machine and I was compiling code.

@Zecc I guess if you want to sell Windows 11 to Gen Z, you've got to add Gen Z bullshit

No

Taskbar on the bottom makes the aspect ratio of what's left of the screen worse, on the side it makes it better. At least for laptops, but probably also for these UWXVWQHD surfboard-size resolutions.

Even for regular screens, pretty much all of which are wider than they are tall these days. For text based work for sure. I pretty much never have stuff fully maximized horizontally. It makes it too difficult to read.
-
@topspin The problem with having it on the side is that it tends get relatively wide. If you want to display any text (which extends more horizontally than vertically), you need to make it wide enough to allow for at least a word or two.
FWIW- outside of Windows, I simply make the bar exactly tall enough to fit a 10/12pt line of text and nothing more. Also my window manager allows windows to overlap the bar in a non-retarded way. (For Windows, I don't really care that much. Games are fullscreen, so location of the bar doesn't really matter at that point.)

I... guess?
Then again, with Windows 11 doing the whole "LMAO You want text with your taskbar icons? " thing I can't imagine why they would care how wide the bar is in vertical mode anyways...

Why is this a problem?
In my case I already have Tree Style Tab in Firefox; the solution explorer and documents tabs on the left in Visual Studio; and the taskbar on the left on the server to which I remote the most.
I also open code diffs relatively often. And now that Win10 has virtual desktops, I can keep the number of taskbar buttons relatively low.
All these factors contribute to me currently preferring using up a little vertical space vs more horizontal space. This wasn't a direct answer to your question, but not completely unrelated either.

So you're saying that the right side of the desktop is available?

I actually have my taskbar on the bottom on one of my monitors . It's slightly taller than the other and this way when I stretch my vm window across both it hits the bottom of usable space.

I keep it available for Fitts'sLaw-ing scrollbars, even though the scrollwheel is a thing most of the time.

Limited amount of pixels on the screen, and every one of them has a higher purpose than being part of the Windows taskbar.
Dunno. Just an observation. I've minimized screen estate taken by any WM/OS stuff by habit. (Window decorations are a one-pixel outline, which I realize is a bit decadent still.)

Right, but since I have so much more horizontal space than vertical, I tend to optimize accordingly.
Actually, I really hate the flat windows that have no visible border. Which includes stuff like menus in my Chrome bookmarks. Those borders serve actual positive UX purposes!

No real need - move+raise/resize/lower window with ctrl+alt+{lmb, mmb, rmb}. This further deals with idiot applications that think they get to dictate where they're placed and what size they should have.

I do too, on the side and set to auto-hide.
To be fair () to Windows, though, that's mostly because the Mac dock is comparably useless anyway. It's like setting Windows task bar to icon only and always collapse window groups, minus start menu, clock, and system tray (which Mac has in the top menu). No point in showing that.

I have my mac one on the side of one monitor and auto-hiding. Which is good, but also bad. Because the dock has this obnoxious behavior of not liking to pop up if a window on the other monitor has focus. And has a stupid long delay before popping up.
Honestly, Win 11 >> macOS. In just about every way. Call me a heretic, but it's the truth. And I've had fewer stability issues with my home-built windows machine that's gone through upgrades from Win 7 > Win 10 > Win 11 without full reinstall and had an SSD swap/clone in the middle than I have on my 1.5 year old, high-end macbook pro.

I haven't liked anything Windows since Windows 7. At least I can just close my macbook and put it in a bag without the whole thing overheating like a Tesla.

I do this as well, and it's actually a big part of why I don't want the taskbar on the side. I can use the bottom edge of the screen as an infinitely-deep target to switch between windows, and the left side (of the left monitor) for tabs

Unless I can add my own post-its with passwords on them, this is useless.
Hopefully they at least thought about sticker packing relative to system effect. If the "run another app" sticker is more than maybe large icon size, they've gone too far. But the "have DirectX" sticker could be pretty big, y'know.
