So I'm finally replacing my old Surface Pro 3 for the upcoming travel season. This will be a secondary device, so I'm more in need of thin/light/touch capabilities than raw power. And NO, I don't need LEDs. Probably in the 13.3/14-inch range. 15.6" is too heavy generally, 12" is too small.
Price range tops out at ~$1k (± $200 or so). Reliability and battery life are key. Performance has to be enough not to make me tear my hair out, but doesn't have to run much of anything strenuous. Maybe some light photo editing/vector graphics/drawing programs at heaviest.
Honestly, a Surface Book 2 would be almost perfect...except the cost is a bit much and it's a bit dated at this point. The reviews of the Surface Laptop 3 have me concerned, especially the high (almost Apple-like!) markup for increasing storage space (I want 256 GB minimum, with ideally 12 GB RAM, although I'll settle for 8 if I have to).
Thoughts? Brands y'all like? Brands y'all hate?

I've been happily using the SurfaceBook 2.
I'm hoping they put out a hardware refresh by Q4.

@error I read they had issues with coil whine. Did you experience that?

No, I've never noticed that. If you get a docking station make sure to upgrade the dock firmware or you might have weird annoying issues.

The Lenovo Yoga C930 is on sale for $900 (normally like $1200). Seriously tempted. And the (slightly) upgraded C940 is only $100 more.

@Benjamin-Hall pulled the trigger.

Ah, too late. I was going to recommend the Surface Pro 7 and a fast SDXC card. I'm quite happy with it and I can still use all my old accessories from the Pro 3.

@dfdub that wasn't on my list, since it's small (12.3"), I'm not fond of the type cover (the key travel sucks), and I prefer a more traditional clamshell build since it will be on a lap a lot.
But I certainly considered it.

OK, if you want to use it in "laptop mode" on your lap (I usually use it as a tablet when I don't have a table), then the Surface Pro is definitely not the best choice.

I consider any convertible with a detaching keyboard not a laptop because almost inevitably this means they need more than the keyboard hinge to remain upright, which is not conducive to psp usage.
