@boomzilla What sort of inclement weather in Florida and the Bahamas could possibly be worse than winter in Boston? Unless it's an actual hurricane, I'd rather be in Florida, and even then it's a toss-up.

“We guess you could say THIS one will o-fish-ially catch your eye.”
No. No, you could not.
the alleged suspect can be seen wearing dark-colored pants, a navy blue T-shirt, and a fishing hat carrying the tarpon.
The fishing hat is carrying the fish? Earlier, the article said the suspect was carrying it in a net. Maybe the hat was carrying it, but the suspect put it in the net because it's a much more practical way of carrying a big fish than on your hat.

this kind of scam is based on the same principle: using completely technology from a wrong era, so people don't understand how it works. The only difference is the era: 1800s instead of 2000s.
Quoting from the second article (emphasis mine):The scammer will ask that the extra money be refunded. Shortly after the contractor sends the cash and occasionally after work begins, the scammer’s original check will bounce from the contractor’s bank account.

@boomzilla I can totally see the construction business being a hotbed of scamming. There's a lot of work done on credit, for various pieces of construction. Occasionally you hear about contractors that got a bunch of materials on credit based on no approval at all from the client, and then it goes into lawsuits and the only question is how much money everyone is going to lose. Though I'd definitely expect a lot more up-front payments on house-scale work.
-
@boomzilla How the hell does a toilet explode‽ It is neither flamable nor pressurized.
-
Typically, waste gases.
-
-
@Dragoon I still don't see where they should build up. The sewer is not pressurized, a cesspool isn't either and even if there might be a flap on the waste pipe that could get jammed, the waste pipe is normally open to the atmosphere on the roof. I can imagine the waste flowing back through the toilet if it gets clogged or if the sewer gets flooded from elsewhere, but I don't understand where it could build up enough pressure to injure anybody.

Never underestimate creativity of subclass contractors.
-

enough pressure to injure anybody.
That's the claim: “severe and long term injuries” and the claimant "has required mental health care and counseling since the incident". Details on what the “bodily injury” consists of are not yet forthcoming. What's more, there had been "previous incidents", so whatever exploded can't have been the toilet itself.
"I got wet and it was AWFUL! That's gotta be worth a hundred large, right?"
Edit, with bonus Florida:
-
Vent pipes are common nesting areas for many animals and can result in full blockages.
They don't mention where this is in Florida (the picture is from a store in Boston) so I have no idea where it is. But the store could be on a septic system or in a area that still uses clay pipes for sewer. Septic systems can get explode if they fail. Clay pipes are notorious for allowing vegetation to grow in the lines and causing extreme blockages which could easily allow for enough pressure to build it.
As for the injury, it isn't stated in the article and when asked about it the mans lawyer declined to comment, so it could simply be that he got shit in his eye (which can do serious damage, not belittling that) but doesn't require the toilet to literally explode either.
It could also be that it caused him to slip and fall from the shock of it all and he injured himself in the fall.

@boomzilla He's fortunate to be alive. Something similar happened in Prague some years back and … the tiger went straight for the kill. While the tiger was used to the keepers and would allow them to come in the enclosure without attacking them, the bloke swimming in the moat that is around the enclosure behaved too differently to be recognized as such.
Also while trying (unsuccessfully) to find a suitable reference, a couple of other very similar incidents from different zoos came up in the search. Looks like at least one dummy tries such stunt somewhere every year—usually with fatal results if it's a tiger he tries to visit.
-
@Bulb If you try to shake hands with a tiger, and the tiger shakes your whole body, can we call it success?
-
-
@boomzilla It's not the fall that kills you; it's the sudden stop at the end.
