Paid, closed-source software on Linux? Shockingly not an UTTER failure!

@blakeyrat Last time I checked Oracle do run on Linux (Official support on RHEL). Is that a terribly troubling idea to you?
Oracle is an UTTER failure though. Not financially, just in every other way.

I beg the difference ... they really succeed their goal of making insane amounts of money while pissing of IT pro's so

@cheong Oracle is shit, Linux is shit, sounds like a match made in heaven.
Not sure what you're implying (or trying to imply) by your question...

I mean, companies trying to sell their software on Linux but with some level of success is not that uncommon.

@cheong If only someone had posted something like this in the thread:

This is consumer-grade software, not like some $50,000 CAD system
-
@blakeyrat then, games. The Steam store is not exactly overflowing with Linux games, but they are increasing in number.

I was replying to your first post in this thread.

Every single one of which runs better in Windows!
Valve briefly made a couple of theirs run better by expending a huge effort, but since Linux is nothing but regressions and bugs they were back to running worse a year later.
-
You asked for examples of consumer-grade software on Linux, I gave you some. Whether they run better or worse, it's irrelevant (and not so easy anyway). I'm not well-informed enough about gaming (anywhere, be it Windows, Linux, etc.) so I'm not going to argue that it's either true or false. What I know is that things are improving for AMD users as they have open sourced and mainlined their drivers. On Linux, you cannot expect out-of-tree development to go as smoothly as mainline stuff. And anyway, you don't have to necessarily update either drivers or kernels.

Oracle running on ANYTHING should be terribly troubling to everyone.

How do you know this, you're gaming on Linux?

When did that happen?
-
@blakeyrat when you said that proprietary, closed source consumer-grade software on Linux is news. Maybe you didn't ask for it, but you asked for it.
-
@admiral_p You sure showed me.

@sockpuppet7 Ah yes, Steam for Linux, I had forgotten about it. It was 5 years ago and it was going to change everything forever.
The everything changed forever status however seems to remain negative.
-
@anonymous234 forever is a very long time.

Disagreed, it's way easier to find Linux games now than before Steam.

Its calendar is pretty damn meh, but whatever.
I use Thunderbird too. I linked my calendar in that to my google one. OMG - "It Just Works"

To run games about 80% as well as on Windows, you literally do. People are all excited about DXVK, but it'll be years before it comes out, and it's currently kind of hilariously bad.
