There is password management software to keep track of passwords, but if anything happens to your computer you'll lose them all.
That's actually probably true for most people who don't back stuff up. Of course, it's the wrong lesson to learn, but this seems like the same sort advice that lead to Windows Updates forcibly restarting people's computers and I'm told that's a good idea.
