Laptop Recommendations Query: <$550 laptop for general use and some video editing
-
Asking for a friend:
Hey - I need a laptop stat - my Macbook is acting odd. i know your're a PC guy - what do you recommend that's around 400 - 550 bucks? I will really only use it for word processing for work, social media, and maybe photo editing/making little films. I don't game. what's the best quality for what I need?

@dreikin Re: video editing, how patient is he? Any < $550 laptop is going to take a long time to encode video, unless he's still filming 480p or something.
I like Acers. If he's used to a MacBook, maybe something in this line will suffice (see esp. the Swift 3): https://us-store.acer.com/laptops/swift-ultra-thin-laptop
Or something like this: https://us-store.acer.com/laptops/aspire-3
Note that in that price range, you'll almost certainly end up with an i3.
EDIT: if you talk him up $50, you can get an Aspire E with an i7 and 1080p screen: https://us-store.acer.com/laptops/aspire-e

I don't think she means anything terribly fancy, but right now the above quote is all the information I've got (I don't think she's on right now). I'll ask her and get back to you, on this and the $50 more question.

@dreikin Well, one thing I should have mentioned: keep disk space in mind. The Aspire E (third one I linked) has a 500 GB drive, that's probably a BARE MINIMUM to do any kind of video work. Unless she already has a USB2 or USB3 external, then it might be a non-issue.
Also if she's coming from a MacBook it almost certainly didn't have any more disk than that anyway.

@dreikin Have your tried any refurb places.
My current Windows Laptop is a refurb from misco.co.uk
I paid £100 for the laptop itself and then spent another 40 quid on ram and another 70 on an ssd drive.
It isn't ultra high end but it is a core i5 with a 900p screen and 8gb of ram. Not a bad bit of kit.

In terms of "Bang for the buck", I have found Asus to be the best be for over 5 years...
