Why do people do this?

Me: Hey, SME. Do you have a sec? Got a question about a problem I'm having.
SME: I can talk in about an hour.
Me: Sure thing. Just call me when you're back. I'll let you know if I fixed it in the meantime.
[15 minutes later]
Me: Hey, SME. Nevermind about the problem. I've figured it out.
SME: Oh, what was the problem?
Me: [just gives a brief description of the problem and explains how I fixed it]
SME: Oh yeah, you just have to do [same exact thing I just said did].
Me: Yep, that's what I did.
SME: I'll talk you through it when I get back.
Me: No, I already did it.
SME: Remember to do [other thing I also said I already did]
Me: Yes, I did that. Like I said, the matter is resolved.
SME: When I get back, we can figure this out together.
Me: There's nothing left to do. It's done.
SME: Actually, this sounds like an important matter. Let me take this lunch to go and I'll come back and walk you through it.
Me: Not necessary! It's no longer a problem! Your assistance is no longer needed!
[10 minutes later]
SME: Hey, I'm back at my desk. Wanna show me the problem? For some reason this sort of conversation has happened with different people over the past few years.
