@Applied-Mediocrity That may have been the end of the ban on wolf hunting...

I also wonder if the Paris zoo has been automatically taxed for any pools for water-critters they may have.
Probably not, because it is unlikely that the Paris zoo did not lawfully declare all their pools, given how public they are, by definition.
Also a basin of water in a zoo probably does not have to follow the same rules as a pool for private use in a private home.
Also also they would not be automatically taxed anyway, the AI system is only flagging the properties for review, the actual taxing still has to be validated by humans.
Note that I'm not advocating tax evasion. I was just noting that you don't need to build a roof over one if you can masquerade it as a solar installation instead, in a purely hypothetical sense.
I guess if you're going to go to such lengths (and costs and inconvenience!) to hide your pool, your concern has to be something else than tax evasion, because it's going to cost you much more than whatever additional tax you have to pay...

An ignobel winner if I have ever seen one:
"These mice grow bigger on the rainier sides of mountains: It might be a new rule of nature"
"the scientists put forth a new hypothesis: the mice on the western slopes were bigger because that side of the mountain range gets more rain, which means there's more plentiful food for the mice to eat."
The only possible explanation for animals getting bigger when there's more to eat is a new rule of nature.

the simultaneous achievement of heat and stability brings us a step closer to a viable fusion reactor – as long as the technique used can be scaled up.
Scaling up is a bitch.

A sustained, stable experiment is the latest demonstration that nuclear fusion is moving from being a physics problem to an engineering one
Uh...its been an engineering problem more than a physics problem for a long time now.

@DogsB no more iPhone mini?
I got the iPhone 13 mini last year, which is roughly the same size as the 6S I had before, and at the upper limit of what you can comfortably use with one hand. Well, comfortably , I'm already putting my pinky finger below the phone to hold it.
I guess the current standard usage is to put some kind of big-ass bumper on the back you can hold onto instead of the phone itself and carry the phone in your purse. Well, I don't have such bullshit. Why don't the people who want ginormously large phones just shove an iPad mini in their pants and leave me with a sane size?

Amen. At least iPhone SE exists, but it's crazy that no Android competition offers any alternative (except some cheap-ass crap).

Well if you are going to go out of your way to not go along with the program, you can't blame Apple for your discomfort. /applefanboi
That ipad suggestion is a good one. I assumed that the 5G ipad would be much more expensive, but it isn't. If I were a purse-carrier and an iphone user, I would consider that.

No but there's still the SE.

I have a 12 and a 2020 SE. I find them both just as comfortable to use as each other, although they are both in cases and the flat sides of the 12 makes the case less bulky on the sides than on the SE so they end up the same width even though the 12 itself is wider.

@topspin I wonder what kind of protocol and authz are involved for triggering these beads. Do they broadcast chess competitions live?
-
@topspin I'm sure there's a technical solution for this. Since we're talking Chess players, I'm proposing mandatory vibrating buttplugs (random vibration patterns).

I think the audience can see things live, yes. You'd certainly need to encrypt the signals and hide them in background noise, so that nobody notices. Putting the tech in anal beads left as an exercise for the reader.
-
@topspin You'd need a fairly strong signal? Body tissue tends to block RF signals fairly well.

Demographics of chess tournaments undergoes a significant shift.

Presumably you'd want to take the beads out after the match: isn't there usually a pull string that could double as an antenna? There's a lot I don't know about anal beads.
