Epson EcoTank printers
-
Epson is about to launch a series of printers where it isn't cheaper to simply buy a whole new one when the ink runs out.

I like it. I'd like to know how their printer heads are different, and why it doesn't work with the old ones.
I've had a continuous ink system previously, and that worked well.
-
With a name like super-tank at the very least I'd expect tracks and a gun turret.
-
I don't see the WTF here. Is it the ink tanks? Are the headers much more expensive since they have to be of better quality to withstand more pages?
-
huh.... now if they solve the clogging problem from low volume printing and price the printer reasonably i think we might be onto a winner.
/me looks at the prices
almost $400 for the basic model? i can get a colour laser printer for that price that doesn't have theissue with clogging after long periods of no printing.
now granted the toner refills will be more expensive than the ink, but that's something i'm willing to deal with for the higher quality of the laser, the waterproofness of the toner, and the lack of clogging.
maybe when they sort out the prices and work out the kinks from the first couple of generations

higher quality of the laser
Isn't ink Waaaaayyyyyy better for photos?
I share the other concerns too.
-
I'm actually a little confused now
I just read the article and went to Epson's US site where it has the 'notify me when it's in stock' thing.
But when I check here in Poland I can buy other versions today for around $150 dollars.

TIL color laser printers are actually affordable this days.

Not sure about that until I see the price of those ink bottlesBestBuy sells the EPSON bottles for US$13 which is actually quite cheap. But I can see that HP toners are 60€ each color or 12€ for "compatible" ones... that's TRWTF!

-shrug- maybe.
i print those so damn infrequently i usually just email the ones i want printed to staples to print via dye sublimation on archival paper for something like 50p per copy. works out cheaper for me than trying ot keep a working inkjet printer and the photo paper.
or i just print them on the laser and get damn good quality anyway, not quite archival quality, but like i said Staples will print that via dye sublimation for ridiculously cheap if i need that.

yeah. i tend to buy refurbished HP toner cartridges at ~20-30$ about once every two/three years at the rate i print stuff. the compatible ones are cheaper but their build quality is usually rather lacking.

Finally, something to compete with the Laser Jet.

I don't see the WTF here.
I assumed it was:
cheaper to simply buy a whole new one when the ink runs out.
-
What? Did the free market suddenly decide that cheap is good?
-
YOU CAN'T ANTHROPOMORPHIZE A MARKET!
Oh...sorry...
