It's timely, however. I've been debating linking this:
It's an essay from a guy who was a Lieutenant in the US Army during the European campaign and was preparing for the invasion of Japan. Well worth reading for many reasons. Since the thread was already necro'd (and, 70th anniversary, so timely), I figured I'd go ahead. My paternal grandfather was in a pretty similar situation to the author, though not, to my knowledge, as physically wounded, but almost certainly at least as bad off mentally.
