Shell WTF

@blakeyrat, can I borrow your to give to @boomzilla for a minute?
Seriously, now, how did I ?
-
Because "from the perspective of the user" isn't the metric. Someone had to set that up. Just because it wasn't the user that did it doesn't mean it didn't happen.
-

OK, if you want to make it a meaningless discussion, I'll accept your point.

I think it started out that way. But not arguing Blakey's point won't help you win the argument.

I'm not going to look back, but I recall him bitching about what it took to set up an ssh key. At some point, you gotta request an account or a new VM or whatever. All I was saying was that it could be part of that process, however it's handled by whomever it hooking you up.
I'm not sure why having a process or a person handle that for you is cheating because there's someone or something doing that for you instead of whatever blakey was doing. So I disagree with your assessment of what we were talking about in the first place since you were just so you could accuse me of moving them back.
Anyways, I think my key file starts with a dash, so it'll probably kill the new VM so I'm not sure what the point of it all is to begin with.

Neither am I but I thought it started with "Linux doesn't come out of the box with a secure GUI login". Your comment about admin setting one up for you is certainly a thing that can happen, but doesn't address that.
Apropos of nothing, back in the 90s at the GNU offices, they hacked the X login dialog to not hide your password.

Well, I thought we'd moved on to ssh keys, which is what I was thinking about when I typed that stuff. But your comments make more sense now that our shoulder aliens are sync'd up.

Never go full Mentat. Does horrible stuff to your lips. And hairstyle.
Don't eat the whole box at once!

Sounds to me like all this argument could be boiled down to “blakey isn't using the right tools and won't admit that he and his employer are TRWTF”. Alas, that doesn't leave a lot of room for interesting discussion.

Says the guy who made post #360 or so.

So there were interesting things anyway. But they're usually interesting despite what certain forum members say, not because of it…
