The Missing Link (Value)!

Buggered if I know how to repro this one, I'm afraid, I think it involves trying to compose a fresh reply when a stale reply that you tried to abandon is still lurking in the Discotubes...

And now my reply window is busted and won't let me change who I'm replying to. I guess a Discorefresh is in order now...
Also I lost the post I had composed now at this point, so thanks Sidecosur for being a barrier to communication.
-
...I liked the post I'm replying to and this happened:
I'm on mobile obviously but look at the butons at the bottom

They look nothing like islands.
More seriously, what is supposed to be at the bottom?

I think she means Discourse buttons, below the post...

these things?
soft buttons for android. from left to right they are: Back, Home, App History/Switcher
-
Wut? When did they completely fuck up the iconography?
Or is that a third-party thing?
-
no. that's how they look on Lollipop AOSP (android direct from google w/o any manufacturer overlay).
Based on past conversations with @Yamikuronue i believe that she is rocking the awesome Nexus 9 in that screenshot
-
Huh. I did have Cyanogenmod 12 installed, but...
Oh, wait, right. That phone still has that silly notion of actual buttons (well, ok, one proper button and two touch buttons... what are those theses days anyway, infrared?), so I didn't see the software ones.
-
yeah. the soft buttons only show up when there are no physical buttons (and there shouldn't be physical buttons if you ask me. give the screen real estate to the phone. the soft buttons disappear when not in use to give you more screen space.

Yes
love that device. i wish they'd kept the 7" form factor as that was a way more convenient size for me.... but no device is perfect.

Not this:
Ah - didn't notice that.
-
and there shouldn't be physical buttons if you ask me
There should be. I much prefer the buttons on my S5 to the non-buttons on my Nexus 5 & 7.
There's the space there, it's not like losing the buttons gains anything.

screen space. you lose the buttons you can make bigger screen in same form factor. this is nice win for things like reading and movie watching.

The Nexus 5 does not do this, it removes buttons and there's just a bit of useless non-screen at the bottom. Which is more or less completely hollow.
My S5 has a similar amount of non-screen down the bottom but it's put buttons there.
-
I tend to be in landscape mode since that's how my keyboard-folio docks. There's definitely not room for hard buttons in that orientation.
-
There should be.
Indeed. Sometimes I just want to hit
Home
, orBack
while not necessarily looking at the phone. With physical buttons I can actually do that without it being a game of chance. Why don't we remove power and volume buttons as well then? Cyanogenmod can sleep / wake up on double tapping the screen. I can also adjust screen brightness by sliding my finger over the notification bar. Might as well remap that to volume and bam! No pesky buttons left!
-
Just make every surface on the phone into a touch screen. No pesky buttons, maximum screen space.

I honestly cannot decide if this belongs in Good Ideas, Bad Ideas, or Evil Ideas...
Topic is way....
