Moving posts to an existing topic

Continuing the discussion from How To Demoralize Employees: A DIY Guide For Terrible Companies:
Shame it also doesn't fix the read status on those posts too.
Or arrange them in the destination thread in order of posting, instead of just dumping them all at the end...
But that's something I found out ages ago when messing around moving posts between topics, categories and (snort!) private messages.
-
The bugs category is that way.
-
You presume it's a bug....
-
Yeah...for readers of the target thread...those could be completely new posts. I don't have a major problem with this.
-
True...
-
I see two issues here, actually.
Firstly... the read status of both threads is not especially hard to determine. It's already doing some work on this in the first place to identify how many new posts there are, and it must by definition be updating whatever log is going on.
Consequently: if it's doing that it really isn't a huge step to saying 'well, have any users already read this stuff and therefore we can just update the values differently for them'. Values still need updating somewhere down the line.
Secondly... dumping them at the end of the topic is not ideal, especially if the time stamps indicate they should be otherwise. Though, true, it's also not great if the timestamps indicate a jump in time. I was going to say that it wouldn't be hard to offer the option but since position-in-thread is stored you'd have to update all of those...
Because none of this has ever come up in the history of forums and users have never had to wrestle with any of these concerns ever... ;)

Especially with some moderators' propensity to continually mess around with posts...

Indeed. It's almost like it's just built to fit in with a certain induhvidual's take on how things should be rather than what everyone else does especially given how everyone else solved these problems years ago.

bumping to 10 posts
-
oooh. that's what all the necroing is about. summon my bots if you need help getting the posts.
-
Yes, I figured that out when I saw all the topics he was necroing now have exactly 10 posts (except the ones to which someone else has further contributed since his necro).
-
hmmm.... should i write a bot for that?
-
I figured that I'd be mildly evil, but I'm done

We must take care, lest PJH disqualify the topics due to abuse.

hmmmm a careful way to do it eeeh?
we may be able to make that happen....

Whatever .c09fa970-5a9a-11e4-8ed6-0800200c9a66 could you mean?
Alternatively I could just stop posting the queries and change the criteria altogether. How would a clause disqualifying necro'd topics go again...?
-
probably have something to do with measuring the gaps between posts and disqualifying topics that have more than ~20 days between posts, except you'd probably want to requalify the topic if the necroing is successful in keeping the topic alive long enough.....
also, please don't stop our statsporn. hide the queries if you must but leave us our statsporn.... please?
