Both these VMs are running Windows (7 on virt-manager, 8.1 on VirtualBox), so I guess Windows has loads of different stock network drivers available, it's just a case of stumbling across a supported one when you configure the VM..? *shrug*

Pretty much, yes.
it's just a case of stumbling across a supported one when you configure the VM..?
Kind of. I guess 7+ has Intel available as well. Might be that the one I needed extra drivers for was XP (I know PcNet ones were giving me some latency issues that the machine I was connecting it to didn't like). Default PcNet thing worked for me every time, no idea why it didn't for you.
-
virtio
always requires additional drivers from my experience, since it's not an emulation of an actual device, it's strictly a virtual card used for VMs. From what I read it works really well, but hey, if "real" emulated hardware does the job, meh.The way I see it, it's like using OpenGL through Wine. You're actually using DirectX, which in turn is actually using OpenGL. There's some overhead when you convert from one format to another and back to the first.

They probably want to make their drivers a bit more self-installing then, I just had a sad VM with no network and no conceivable way to fix itself...
-
Can't most VM software emulate a CD drive with a disk image containing installers for its drivers?

Status: OK, VM is set up to compile teh codez. Now how do I get an OpenGL 3.0 context out of it?
-
Aha! VirtualBox Guest Additions...
-
Status: Hmmm... so I know those experimental drivers did something because previously OpenGL Extensions Viewer was reporting OpenGL version of 1.1, and now it crashes when I try to open it...
Update: So AFAICT, I get a warning saying OpenGL 3.0 isn't supported, then it gives me a 3.0 context anyway, but complains about the shader syntax (probably need to fall back to GLSL1.1), and I'm missing at least
glGenerateMipmap()
... This is either going to be trivial to fix or it's going to take days... :/

Might be timezone settings. Keyboard seems to be a bit of a weird thing to use as a language detection parameter.
WTF? Not weirder then timezone ... Even country would mean a coin toss for either Dutch or French for me. Keyboard will be Azerty Belgium (point) and timezone Brussels but neither even hint at my language.

I know of more cases where people don't use the "local" layout than having the wrong timezone set. Because, you know, I'd like the time on my computer to be the local time, not NY or something, even though I use US layout.

On the screen where the only option was "OK", or on the one where the only option was "Next"? Unless it was on the website before I clicked on download. In which case, fuck them all the same.

I know of more cases where people don't use the "local" layout than having the wrong timezone set.
Timezone is also often set to Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam. In regards to timing questions this will behave the same as they are in the same time zone and use a common Summertime definition but it would lead to rather wild language suggestions.
What are we talking about both suggestions are equally terrible, and relying on any of these to determine the language should be punished

In fact, a significant number of US users aren't going to be in the NY timezone (EST/EDT). The US is a big country, and has, what, four or five different timezones (not as many as Canada, but I digress...) Someone on the West coast is going to want PST/PDT along with US keyboard layout. (It's also what I'm using because the "Canadian Multilingual" layout is all kinds of crazy weird, so I disabled it...)

Nine. Seven if you just count States. (Atlantic Time, Alaskan Time, and Hawaii Time.)

Well, Belgium, always an edge case...

Yes, I believed the whole of US was in a single timezone. They actually shouldn't even get that, the US is just this patch of land in my back yard. I am completely oblivious to anything outside my back yard, so how would I even know of it otherwise?

I don't go there very often. Full of trolls. I come here to relax instead.

No portion of the continental United States is located in the Atlantic Standard Time Zone; however the territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands do fall under Atlantic Standard Time.
Well, TIL...
EDIT: Newfoundland time is still unique to Canada, though...
-
IIRC that's only because Maine fudges it. Either way, Puerto Rico is practically a State so I stand by my factually incorrect statement.

You should follow Canada's example and get them all nicely arranged together somewhere in the North. (They should all fit into Montana—nobody lives there, right?)
