The noise seems to be distributed among all the geese.
As far as the language is concerned, I cannot define it well. It sounds all po-Gąsku to me.

The seagulls here are like that. Two of them together foraging for food frequently sounds like a married couple arguing in another language.

@Tsaukpaetra does it have to be 2 years? It'd be much easier to visit you 3 years ago.
Edit: it'll had been I guess. Does some have a time travel tenses cheat sheet?

Three years ago.... Yeah that would work. But you'd have to find me, the server room was in a much more obscure location than it was two years ago.

Core isolation has been a feature for quite a bit longer than that!

Just after Richard had invented a time machine, he visited his former self.

That's the sort of thing that is why I don't join my devices to WTF-U's remote manageability domain.
OTOH, phones are usually much less of a problem to reboot... unless you have one of those models that insists on playing a chime on reboot at a volume louder than you can select when using the phone normally.
-
@dkf said in The Official Status Thread:

When you know about the reboot. If you don''t, you are locked out of all incoming calls, texts and other notifications for who knows how long.
-
@Gustav said in The Official Status Thread:

Wat
I'm not. Well, no more locked out than I am generally anyways.
-
@Tsaukpaetra do you have Android 10 or up? Then reboot the phone, do NOT unlock it even once after reboot, wait until it feels like it should be fully functional at this point, and try calling it.
-
@Gustav My phone is running a very not-recent version of Android. Part of the boot process is to "optimize" several apps. Depending on how many apps it decides to "optimize", this can take as much as an hour, maybe more. During this time, the phone is completely unusable in any way and uses a lot of power, enough that if it's not plugged in, it may drain the battery to the point of shutting off again, and if it is plugged in, it will be very warm to the touch.
-
@HardwareGeek said in The Official Status Thread:

I think that's actually recompiling them into native code. I'm not sure about that, but it would make sense. I also suspect that it's something done in Google's cloud when you're installing in the first place so you don't see the time cost then.
My phone's recent enough that it only takes a few minutes (and I schedule reboots for 2am when I have it plugged in to recharge overnight; this model doesn't feel the need to wake the dead on reboot).

This is exactly it. And in my experience, it doesn't take more than a few minutes even on low-end phones. But then, I don't have all that many apps on my phone.
-

It depends a lot on the phone. Some of the older ones took ages.
-
@dkf based on what I know, it depends more on what's on the phone than what the phone is. I had some very, very shitty phones.
-

I guess it would depend on what the apps were, yes. And maybe also the linking options (and what versions of libs are present in the version of the base OS) and the phase of the moon.
-
@dkf said in The Official Status Thread:

This. Mine is ~6 years old, and it seems to take about 20 minutes per app. Sometimes it will "optimize" just 1 or 2; sometimes it will "optimize" 5 or 6. It never displays which apps it's optimizing, just how many. "Optimizing app 1 / 6"
But then, I don't have all that many apps on my phone.
I have only a few that aren't Google's own apps. I have more than I thought I did, but far fewer than most people probably do. "You can do
$thing
through our app. Download it from the Apple or Android store."
Even so, I have about a dozen.

I know that exact feeling.

At least that exact vibe guarantees ruling out Hive as a Twitter replacement for me: I don’t even have to deal with the “are the creators Bad People” question some are throwing around, it has no web version therefore no go for me.
-

Error: impossible, apps on the encrypted part are not enabled until then. It says this even.
Also, my phone is banned from the network because AT&T hates china or something. I can only receive texts and data anyways.
-
@Tsaukpaetra why would the phone app be encrypted?!
So an attacker who steals your phone can’t download it?

This is the question we've been asking Google for many years now.
