🔥 Terrorists: we are being pressured by iPhones into creating Apple backdoor
-
have you tried El Capitan?
I prefer to call that “10.11”.It's a bug-riddled calamity.
I wouldn’t go that far, but I have been known to comment lately that I want my OS X back the way it was five to ten years ago, though with all the current features :) I’ve not experienced any of the bugs you mention, but I do find that too often something minor goes wrong that requires logging out and in, or even rebooting, to fix. That’s exactly the sort of thing that in the past, Mac users tended to say to Windows users never happened on OS X …
-
Even assuming that this dubious assertion is in fact accurate: what's to be done about it?
Seriously? I guess you replied before reading the rest of the thread.
If you're going to screen immigrants, the only way to avoid a ridiculously high and resentment-promoting false positive rate is to do it on the basis of checking past behaviour, networks of known criminal associates and so forth - things that have a much higher correlation with being a terrorist than merely being Muslim or having a particular country of origin. And you need to apply these tests to all prospective immigrants, not concentrate them on any particular cultural group.
Yes. Duh. But did you know that there are policies in place to prevent this? Though certainly stuff like country of origin has a role to play.
-
Does anyone live close to any Muslims actually?
It's not easy to see any of them here in Korea.
Does anyone have any experience living among them?
There's a relatively high local population of Bangladeshi immigrants near me who are Muslim. There are lesser amounts of Muslims from other places, too. The few that I know well are all good people. I mostly know them through Cub Scouts, so I don't think that's surprising.

I wouldn't be so quick to claim that:
Luke 19:27:But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.
Matthew 10:34:Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. You're on a roll for ignoring context.
Luke 19:27 is from the end of the Parable of the Talents. As @FrostCat pointed out, it is talking about the end of days.
As for Matthew 10:34, he wasn't talking about literal violence. Read a few verses around 34:
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
In other words, accepting Christ's teachings, at least for those first few centuries, was not going to be easy. And in fact, many people lost their families when they became Christians. They were disowned, beaten, and even killed. That is what Christ was talking about.
These verses you picked are not biblical justification for Christian violence.
-
Yeah, we need more … Mormon terrorists.
That's what's missing from my life! I need to become a terrorist!
-
The percentage of all Muslims who are terrorists, [...] is very very low.
If only they were the only problem. The fact that a significant minority of the Muslim population is OK with terrorism exacerbates things, as I have already mentioned, but you apparently ignored.
The Koran demands Muslims back each other up over infidels, which means they tend to not help society ferret out terrorists.
It's perhaps instructive to consider that Islam divides the world into two pieces: Dar al Islam, and Dar al Harb. The first part is where Islamic law holds; the latter is everywhere else. Do you know the common translation of Dar al Harb?
-
our "partial solution" is contributing to the resentments that promote extremist behaviou
Blah blah blah. They don't need "provocation". I suppose you would feel that Americans sailing ships near their territory is provokation to seize the ships, impress the crew, and demand ransom.
-
Tell that to all those Christians who use Leviticus to justify the persecution of homosexuals.
Piss off. I've addressed this many times. There is no Biblical justification for that behavior, and the Catholic Church, for example, specifically says so, which I've also mentioned here multiple times.
-
They don't need "provocation".
Quite. American foreign policy in the Middle East since the time of the Balfour Declaration has already been more than sufficient.
Even so, "solutions" that make your problems worse are pointless and stupid.

Piss off.
Fuck you too cunt. There is no Biblical justification for that behavior, and the Catholic Church, for example, specifically says so, which I've also mentioned here multiple times.
Did I say so? Did I make one single fucking claim the Bible actually condones that shit? No, I fucking did not. So how about you stow the fucking attitude then you utter fucking cunt?
-
You're on a roll for ignoring context.
Oh yay, like I'm the only fucker here who does that.Cunt.
-
There is no Biblical justification for that behavior
That's your opinion. But you'll easily find non-Christians every bit as willing to cherry-pick the Bible for examples of advocated violence as you are to cherry-pick the Koran. It's all bullshit. Extremists gonna extreme.

Bruce is on it.

Quite.
American foreign policy inthe Middle East since the time ofthe Balfour Declarationpeople living there has already been more than sufficient. You're way too short sighted.
-
So how about you stow the fucking attitude then you utter fucking cunt?
is going on today? Are you doing a @tufty impression?
-
OK, which one of you cunts called this cunt a cunt?
-
So how about you stow the fucking attitude then you utter fucking cunt?
I see you haven't had a long enough exile from the site, you little ball of hate.
-
is going on today?
Apparently he didn't appreciate my not blithely accepting his Christian-bashing.
-
If you were a proper Christian you'd turn the other cheek.
-

Advocating acceptance of abuse, I see.

She's just got some sand in her vagina today, it seems.

38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
— Matthew 5:38–5:42 KJV
27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.
30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
— Luke 6:27–31 KJV

"I see your teachings tell you to be nice and not retaliate against people, so I hope you don't mind if I throw insults at you all day. I'll even bring a few friends along. After all, you're a good person and can always stick to your teachings, right?"
If you can't see what's wrong with acting like that, you may be one of the worst people alive. There's a huge difference between "When you're abused, you shouldn't retaliate." and the sadistic "I see you're being abused. It's so great that you can't retaliate. I hope this continues."
-
Apparently he didn't appreciate my not blithely accepting his Christian-bashing.
Oh, I'm sorry, did I upset you when I pointed out that Christianity is just as bloodthirsty as any other religion?Fucking good. I'm glad I could be of some fucking use around here you arrogant shit.
-
-
If you were a proper Christian you'd turn the other cheek.
Alas, I am but an imperfect human.
It's probably a sin for you to be taunting people, too, btw.

Many atheists are actually anti-theists, who derive joy from taunting the religious.
-
Oh, I'm sorry, did I upset you when I pointed out that Christianity is just as bloodthirsty as any other religion?
I'm not upset, sandy-vag. "Christianity" isn't bloodthirsty. Ill-informed Christians are.
Just like all the anti-theists who like to taunt the religious.
-
It's probably a sin for you to be taunting people, too, btw.
I'm told God will forgive me.
Now go, or I shall taunt you a second time.
-
I'm told God will forgive me.
No, you're missing a step.
Now go, or I shall taunt you a second time.
Is that what you call it? Because you're not very original at it...or even good either.
-
Please insult me some more. You know I deserve it.
-
Please insult me some more. You know I deserve it.
Even if you do it wouldn't be particularly nice of me, now, would it?
-
Never stopped you before.
-
Never stopped you before.
I never said I was perfect, but I'm trying.
Apparently you are too.
-
-
-
I'm not upset, sandy-vag.
Oh yes, because you throw around insults and shit when you're super-happy. Yeah, I totally get that.Just like all the anti-theists who like to taunt the religious.
Yes, if you just ignore all the cunts misusing your magic story book to commit atrocities, maybe they'll all go away…
-
That's what's missing from my life! I need to become a terrorist!
Does this mean you are a Mormon already?
-
Yes, if you just ignore all the cunts misusing your magic story book to commit atrocities, maybe they'll all go away…
What about the cunts misusing other magic story books, Das Kapital for example?
-
Many atheists are actually anti-theists, who derive joy from taunting the religious.
Many religious people are actually… fuck, sorry, I can't do this today.
Please resume with the regular programming.

What about the cunts misusing other magic story books, Das Kapital for example?
Same cuntery, different title.

Hey, there's this one also:

Man, do I want to see this guy live! Hope this year I'll finally make it.

Is this even a thing that Apple can do? Even if they wanted to? Isn't the entire purpose of encryption that there's no master key and that you can't add one after the fact?
And apparently the guy was employed by the local government and he destroyed his personal phone. Since he didn't destroy his work phone, logically it must not have anything on it that he wanted to hide.
-

What they're being asked to do is make it possible to bypass the enforced wait time after entry of an incorrect PIN and the lockdown after ten unsuccessful tries, making it feasible for the FBI to brute-force the PIN.
-
Wait, that's all? Couldn't the FBI just take the storage out and do the data mining manually? PINs are not encryption.
-
No. On Apple phones, the PIN gets expanded to a 256-bit AES key that encrypts all the stored data. The expansion is done inside a walled-off section of the processor called the Secure Enclave, each of which contains unique keys of its own designed to be resistant to offline retrieval.
Except for John McAfee, the general consensus is that Apple has actually done a good enough job with this that the only feasible way to decrypt the contents of an Apple phone is to do it on the phone itself, using a process that involves feeding a correct PIN into the Secure Enclave.
-

Where do the extra 242 bits come from? Brute forcing a 14-bit AES key should be pretty trivial for the FBI.
