  • Just read about this. Why is --recursive not the default behavior for clone :wtf:

Or, you know, use Maven or Gradle for dependency management.

  • You know if Git was built for filesystems that have a concept of file locking, maybe it wouldn't give a shit if "index.lock" existed before beginning an operation. JUST A THOUGHT LUNIX PEOPLE!

  • Status: Home early from my last day at the job. Finished everything I wanted to get done before I left, pushed changes to production. Cleaned all the porn off my computer and handed my badge in. A little verklempt. It's a good company, full of good people, and I'm going to miss them. Judging from the goodbye gifts, I suspect they will miss me too. I really hope this new job turns out to be as good as I think it is, and that I haven't made a terrible mistake.

  • Well, sounds like you didn't burn a bridge so hopefully you can go back if things go sour :)

  • @glathull said:

Uh, that doesn't sound like something that should be done on a last day. Things going to production when the person that knows about them isn't going to be there anymore sounds dangerous.

  • Actually, yeah. That's been made very clear. If this risky startup venture I'm joining does not work out, I am absolutely welcome to come back, even after they fill my position. My boss, the HR director, and the CEO have all made that very clear. So I guess I'm not really all that worried about the new gig.

There were just a few moments today when I was second-guessing my decision to leave. Right about the time my boss said goodbye and a few other people I've gotten personally close to (no, not that close. 😄)

But you know, work from home--or not home. basically anywhere. could be home when I want; could be working from my parents' farm when I want to hang out with them (and I do want. my dad is 95, I want all the time I can get with him). could be from Minneapolis when the Texas summers get to be, well Texas summers, etc.--plus equity in a company I think has a real possibility of a large value, plus a salary that's 40k a year above what I make now, plus a senior software engineer title, and a realistic shot at VP of technology or even CTO as the company grows . . . . Yeah, it's risky. But it's also very reward-y too if it works out.

  • Meh, I asked my boss how he wanted me to handle it. These were mostly minor things. One new major rollout that he and I both really wanted to get done before I leave because I'm a) the only person who really knows how to deploy that app, and b) because he knows that I'm not just disappearing and he can call me if shit blows up. I pushed to prod around 10 am. With the volume we have running, if it were going to break things it would have done so already.

And by only person who knows, I mean, I'm the only person who's bothered to read the docs. But I've made copious notes, and the next person to come along and do my job will have an easy time of it. It's all in the repo README. It's not like I have some mystery black-box app thing going on.

I feel like I'm leaving everything in good shape for whomever comes along after me. I've always tried hard to keep my projects well-documented. There are no secret things on my personal box that one would need to know how my shit works. Maybe some of my code isn't the best. But it's explained between reasonable comments and readme files.

I don't feel like I'm leaving any cray-cray WTFs behind at the company. And like I said, it was my boss's call. "Hey, boss. Do you want me to push this before I go? Or do you want to run it through QA or what?"

"Push it. QA team will take 2 months before they even start asking what to QA about this. Go for it. Just pick up the phone if I call, okay?"

    "Okay."

Then I cleaned out half a dozen tickets that I'd been sitting on because they were tedious and stupid. Then I packed the fuck up and said, "Gentlemen, I think my work here is done."

    Telerik's JustDecompile's pretty good. And it's free ;)

  • Garbage Person

.... What the fuck is this shit? I just got a "hold off, need to talk to IT security about the legality of decompilers".

Seriously. What. The. Fuck. This shithole isn't ready for software development. This explains everything. It all makes sense now. They don't have even the slightest idea how computers work.

  • Well, I sort of tried to drop trou with a co-worker.

There is a girl I've been working with for the last 6 or so months who is absolutely beautiful and an extremely good developer. Probably better than I am at many (technology-related) things. I've been wanting to ask her out for a long time, but you know, working together, etc. So I did kind of waltz over to her desk and ask if she wanted to go hang out some time since I won't be working there anymore.

She said, "Nope. I don't date people like you." I said, "Okay. That works for me." And started to walk away. Then she said, "Sorry, my English isn't so great. I only date women." I said, "That definitely works for me. So me and you and your girlfriend around 8?"

"Haha! If I were going to go for a man, I think it might be you. You make me laugh, and that's kind of cool. But no. Best of luck with your new gig."

  • This is a sad thing to say, but one of the questions I ask when I'm looking for jobs is about IT policy. Will I have local admin rights? Can I install anything I want and use it how I see fit?

If the answer is no, I fucking pass.

It's about whether or not the company trusts me. You don't trust me; I don't trust you. I get it. I'm not going to get root access to prod on day 1. That's cool. Can I actually use my fucking computer and form it into the tool I want it to be so that I can do my work? No? Fuck you. Not even interested in that job.

Status: Watched a video from the dash cam in the car which caught a phone conversation between me and a colleague. Voice recording is supposed to be off (I'll check that out in the morning) but fffffuuuucccckkkk I sound way more Southern than I thought I did. 😮

  • Do you have a good dashcam recommendation? One that won't look fugly in my nice new Ford Fusion?

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Not sure if it's available in The States (apologies if it isn't) but I use this, which was recommended by a colleague who ran it for a couple of months before I got it:

It hides pretty well (but not completely) behind the rear view mirror on a VW Golf Estate / VW Jetta but well enough I barely notice it. Once the power cable's properly routed/hidden it'd be even less noticeable.

When set to record at 1080 it records about the last 2 hours before cycling the recordings. If it detects a crash (by the motion sensor, or if I press the Emergency button ) then it records 30 seconds either side of the incident into a protected folder on its file system.

YMMV but if you hide it behind the rear view mirror and, that mirror in a Fusion is the same size or larger, then you'll barely notice it if at all.

There's also the Drivepro 200 which has a wider lens and can connect to a smartphone via Wifi but I don't have experience with that model.

  • I don't have any space behind the rear-view mirror-- that's where the radar for the adaptive cruise control. For the same reason, the rear-view mirror isn't removable or replaceable. So I don't think that would work for me.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Ah - I don't have adaptive cruise but (plus mine is a VW not a Ford) but the Fusion you have isn't even a UK model so I can't compare the implementation of the adaptive cruise (which on UK Fords is in the front grille/bumper not the windscreen) anyway. On a UK Ford it wouldn't matter but YMMV.
