there's a reasonable chance that the network connection will just resume working.
Which is really handy if your dumbass laptop manufacturer put AIRPLANE MODE on your F12 unless you hold down "function".
Who uses F-keys?
At least they didn't pick F5
Oh crap.
That's evil.

it's expensive for the server because it keeps an open connection
I don't know what server you're dealing with, but open websockets take virtually zero resources in IIS/C#. Unless data's actually going through them, then they go from "unmeasurably small" to "very slight".
-
@blakeyrat I was thinking more about routers. I have no idea how many connections a router can handle, but routers are fucking expensive.
-
@fbmac Routers are only (practically) limited by the amount of memory they have to keep track of them, same as PC network stacks.
In any case, if those routers are "fucking expensive", well, fine. You're offloading your expense to Level3 or Comcast or Verizon or whoever. It's no longer your problem, but theirs.
-
@blakeyrat It depends whether it is .NET 4.5 or older versions, because the limits are much lower. Also only IIS 8.0 and above web-sockets is officially supported.
So using web-sockets will require an upgrade in infrastructure, if you aren't using a newer version of Windows Server.

@Lorne-Kates you forgot that this is 2016, high speed, high availability networks are ubiquitous and this isn't a problem.
It's our fault for having shitty networks and aren't tied to desks with long cables that never break the connection.
For context: That was (emphasis on "was") a Microsoft employee talking about the then-upcoming XBox One.
