Why are .io domains so common for tech companies?
-
Something I noticed at a Hadoop conference I was at recently and I've noticed in other places, is apparently the cool thing is to use .io domains if you're a tech company, especially startups. Anybody know what that's about? Is it just to look "different"?
-
They're cheap.
-
@AyGeePlus I got my .com domain for like $8 or $15 per year from Google. Not exactly a bank breaking expense.

Same reason people use RoR (and later regret it with every fiber of their being), it's "cool"
-
Other hipsters are doing it, so they need to do it too.
It's important to stand out from the crowd in exactly the same way as all the other cool people do.

They're not. I know godaddy is expensive but this is ridiculous and I've seen the same thing elsewhere.
*edit wrong url alsdo @dkf is probably right!
-
@dkf That's what I kind of suspected, but I wasn't certain. To be fair, many of the companies at the Hadoop conference could justify it in that their products frequently deal with I/O in and out of a Hadoop cluster. But I've noticed it quite a bit for tech companies in general.

Even funnier when you put obvious crap in there…

Personally, I don't understand why you'd have your corporate hedquarters on Io. It's far, dry, and full of active volcanoes.

@Onyx It's well and truly offshore for tax purposes!

No they are not.
My guess is, they are cool and available (unlike .com, that are all used up).

.io for Input/Output.
If you go to https://www.nic.io/ you see their actual price (that everyone has to pay) is £60 per year when you first buy the domain, and (I think, can't remember exactly) it might be cheaper in subsequent renewals. But still VERY expensive compared to other domains.
It is theorized that due to the price of the domains coupled with their techy sounding name, many high quality websites are in the .io namespace. I can't find the article I read this theory in, but at the time it was written the guy went through every .io domain and found that most were high quality. Not sure if it is still true though.

the .io namespace
bash$ host eie.io eie.io has address 50.21.180.100
-
@Gurth My machine won't even acknowledge the existence of that domain.
@dkf this isn't the first time the internet has abused country-specific TLDs.

@aliceif
I don't think those will work in Dutch countries because "moe" means tired.

@LB_ said in Why are .io domains so common for tech companies?:
.be
that's surely a hoax ... such profanity can't be valid.
-
-
@LB_
You mean that youtu.be wasn't specially made for Belgium?
-
@Luhmann Sure it was, by Youtu Corp.
-
@Luhmann Using words like sevensquares! How dare you!
-
-
TIL, moe isn't what I've been using it for.
"Sorry, we finished the leftovers last night."
"Awww.... I wanted moe"
-
@xaade said in Why are .io domains so common for tech companies?:

Larry and Curly might have something to say about that!
-
@xaade It also isn't pronounced like that if you use it the other way, so you're probably fine. There are people who do pronounce it that way, but they don't have ears.
-
@Magus https://la-lojban.github.io/sutysisku/en/index.html#sisku/mo'e
convert sumti to mex operand; sample use in story arithmetic: [3 apples] + [3 apples] = what.
-
@ben_lubar In the usage a few of us are thinking of, the word is Japanese. Japanese Romanized isn't pronounced like English, thus 'moe' is pronounced closer to 'mow aye' if you want to sound like a stupid foreigner.
In this usage, it can mean anything from 'cute, causing an urge to protect' to 'wow that's hot'

Indeed. It all started with the Chinese PengYou DongTu ("Friend Motion Picture") Limited Company (朋友动图有限公司), abbreviated YouTu (友图). Being pushed into a corner on the domestic market by competitors like Soku, they waged the expansion overseas, starting in a yet unexploited market in an obscure European country. It didn't take long before Google noticed the unintentional geniality of the chosen domain name, bought the company and created a .com domain too.
