Maybe we should have a "Vines everybody using Twitter already saw a week ago" thread.
-
Oh - late to the party again I see...
-
Mostly it's me being annoyed because I don't post it myself because I think "haha but surely everybody's already seen it by now".

Some of us avoid the toxic hellstew that is twitter.

I'm sure it's been posted here somewhere... I just can't remember where.

You're probably right, but I was viewing the site in Edge, which can't display whatever video type @pjh posted, so I had no idea what they were talking about; I was just replying to @blakeyrat on general principles. I generally stay off Twitter. Even if it weren't a toxic hellstew there's just too much else in the world for me to bother keeping track of it.

Thanks, although I loaded the page in Chrome so I could see it. I wonder what happened to the video in the ATM.
That is, what specifically went wrong that it looked like that.
-
what is a vine please?
In case that's not a rhetorical question: https://vine.co/Basically, looping videos of up to 6 seconds. The natural evolution of animated GIFs.

Hardware upgrade -> CPU Freq. change -> Video played too fast -> Frame drop

Knew I wasn't going mad.

Well, why did you reply here? You know where the reply as new topic widget is!

...... why?
Because when you call it an "Animated GIF" it's ancient technology from 1989. When you call it "Vine" (And then spend several weeks holding meetings with your investors trying to find a letter that could be removed from that word to make it more uniqurTM) it's new, disruptive, two-point-oh-dot-com, has its own app and a market valuation of eighteen brazilian dollars.

.... fecking hell these marketing people are out of control!
-
eighteen brazilian dollars
18 Brazilian Reals = $4.62 USD. That's not much.
Also you forgot an "a" between "it's" and "new."
-
You're selling it a little short. Animated GIFs don't have sound, so something like this wouldn't have been possible:
-
And that kids is the video where I discovered the volume on my computer was set to maximum.
-

Sure, you know that. But do the employees who were paid entirely in stock options?
Also you forgot an "a" between "it's" and "new."
"New", "disruptive" and "two-point-oh-dot-com" were all being used as adjectives. When I make up words I get to decide what type of speech they are.
The "a" would only be required between "It's" and "me, Mario".
-
That was amazing.

Are you asking why animated GIFs, or why they evolved?
-
Are you asking why animated GIFs, or why they evolved?
animated gifs.... i get that....
but why vines?!
and why vine.co?
why not vi.ne or vin.es?
i mean if you are going to have a "cute" domain name at least put some effort in!
-
You might as well ask why facebook.com instead of facebo.ok. Ask the guy that created it, I guess.

what's facebook?
-
It's a fairly popular website on this in-tur-net thing that the youngsters are always going on about.
-
what is a vine please?
I'm hipster-cool because I pretend to not know what the latest things on the Internet are!

It's clearly worked, considering how it's caught on. At least it's not another Flickr, Tumblr etc
-
I'm hipster-cool because I pretend to not know what the latest things on the Internet are!
I thought you were supposed to have known about it and forgotten about it before anyone else had heard of it.
-

you've got me there on facebook, but i was genuinely confused on vine,
i mean it's a thing that's possible to do when one avoids twitter in the same way and for the same reason as one avoids the youtube comments section.
doubly so when one does not have a facebook account because one cannot be bothered to try and police one's personal information as facebook constantly shifts their TOS to allow them to sell your info before you can notice and tell them not to sell your info.
i have a hard enough time doing that with google, i'm not working that battle on two fronts.
also what is a hipster?
-
If you've seen a 6- or 7-second video anywhere, chances are it was a vine and you just didn't know that's where it was hosted.

you mean imgur? or possibly gfycat? cause the only place i see those is off of /r/aww and they're almost universally hosted on imgur or gfycat
-

It's funny because it's true.
-
But probably rehosted from vine, minus the sound.

/shrug.
do i look like i care? they're invariably kittens trying to jump gaps they can't make or deer frolicking or stuff like that. so long as they give me that hit of aww i don't really care!
:-P
-
they're invariably kittens trying to jump gaps they can't make
Nopw that you know, though, you can find things like this:
-
I'm just sayin', much like the "Dell charging $75 for USB" story, there's a lot that don't add up in the "accalia has never heard of vine" story.
-
but i was genuinely confused on vine
I only know about it because I'm in silly valley. It actually pops up in the news once in a while...
-
When the New York Times has written MULTIPLE stories on it, it's fucking mainstream. Cope.
In fact, "New York Times has written a story on it" is actually a pretty good definition of the term "mainstream".
-
New York Times
Yes, because everybody reads the NYT.
I only know about Vine because of Facebook, actually.
-
His point is that you do know about it, though.
-
I only know about Vine because my sister told me about it. Like a month ago.
-
Wouldn't it be a great fit for DF films?
Vine has about the perfect length to keep the audience captured.
-
I'd say it's at least 6 seconds too long.
