then you never gave it background permission.... or revoked it.
there's somewhere under settings you cna enable that if you want it...
I don't recall ever seeing that option.
In fact, I've just checked, and it's "Run background apps when Chrome is closed" is set. Maybe it's because I don't use any extensions which sit in the background.
-
Why the fuck would you?!
This.
I have plenty of memory, I still don't want Chrome just sitting around in the background. It's a fucking web browser - I clicked Close because I want it to close.
-

that could be it i guess.

Yup

I have a Galaxy S5 without any carrier branding.
Yeah, I hate the branding, and the overlay.
It only accomplishes the following
- Give me useless apps I can't uninstall. Yes, I appreciate one of your apps, the one that sends me voice-mail in an app rather than calling your voice-mail voip. But let ME install it.
- Make me break my phone when I want to switch carriers. Because trust me, if I want to switch, and I'm not ready to buy a new phone, I will break my phone and find a carrier that will take the old phone.
- Make me wait longer for OS upgrades, because I have to wait for you to deem the time fit to upgrade your overlay.
All of which just piss me off.
-
Is there something like this for Chrome / Firefox? It's damned useful for testing:
If you're testing, just turn JS off in the dev tools. It's like 2 clicks.
-
-
It's not just JS:
-
In what way are images "scripts"? Whoever named that plug-in is a shit.

Whoever named that plug-in is a shit.

That guy that named it "Site specific preferences"? Indeed.
I was asking if NoScript can handle something like that, though. Judging by replies, it would seem not.

This is a better ad blocker:

And this can replace NoScript AND adblock together:

+1 for the µBlock. I never had anything annoying come through it and it's super easy to just toggle it off for any website that I visit and want to display ads on without messing about with whitelists and other bullshit.
-
Jesus Christ, is that called "eye rape: the plugin?"
-
And it works off of the same filter lists, except with some of the more expensive CSS hiding rules turned off by default (because they bloat memory!). If you want those rule lists, you can turn them on in the settings.
By "it" I mean both of them. µBlock is also available for Firefox, and µMatrix is coming.
It is pronounced "you-block" / "you-matrix" and "micro-block" / "micro-matrix" interchangeably.

Google Voice.
But yeah, carrier bloatware sucks. And
You can disable them, though.
Is not always true. Even if it is, they still eat up space in/system
, which if you have small internal storage can be very obnoxious.Reason #2213 for Nexus and Moto!
-
Google Voice.
but
if you have small internal storage, they still eat up space
which is why I use the carrier's app.
We should get some antitrust lawyers to use the Microsoft Explorer argument on these bastards.

Oh yeah, I was just saying.
I flashed the non-branded firmware onto my S5. And then accidentally flashed the carrier branded firmware back onto it at the next update
-
Ouch.
Of course @trwtfbot Samsung's TouchWiz UI
-
Samsung's TouchWiz UI is TRWTF
-
Ouch.
Meh - I could have fixed it pretty quickly I just couldn't be arsed. I'll go back to generic UK firmware next time there's an update.
Samsung's TouchWiz UI is TRWTF
I quite like TouchWiz on the newer Samsung's - it's nowhere near as sluggish and annoying as on the older ones.

Eh, to each his own. Stock AOSP looks much, much better IMO.
It's still bloated as hell compared to stock too. Better than it was though.
-

Yes but some of the stuff added is useful. Some, not so much.
It doesn't matter on an S5, it's powerful enough to cope.
-
Yeah but that's what xposed is for

yeah... of course it was a free-to-me because i dumpster dove it at my previous job. it's first gen i5 and weighs a bloody ton.
there's a reason it's gathering dust.

I already have a pile of 3 or 4 unused/broken laptops—I think my wife would object if I tried adding to it...

ah..... why not discourse on one of them....?

Hey, that's not necessarily a bad thing. That only means it's a good, inconspicuous aid to
assault and batteryself-defence.
-
Technically, I kind of am. I dunno, I had about $150 in Amazon vouchers, and this tablet was about $300 with free shipping, and I wanted to have something to build/test against Windows on.
Turns out, it was $300 for a reason...

yeah.... i have one of those too.
an Asus Vivotab Smart. nice little device, battery life is halfway decent...... and it's just about good enough to browse static sites and do email on.....
but that's about it.

I probably ought to have done a little more reading up on the thing before impulse buying, but it is shiny, so...
Just the whole thing seems to be held together with glue, so any attempt to get inside it is going to damage it irreperably. I wouldn't mind a larger HD as well actually, I'm making do with one of those "ultraslimline" 16GB USB drives hanging off the side, and tying up the only USB port at the moment. (So it unmounts and mounts any time I set the thing down with anything less than the utmost of care...)My next laptop is probably going to be in the $2000-$2500 range, and I'm going to put FreeBSD 10 on it and run a load of VMs on it. Although I need to find a new job before I have a reason to "celebrate"...
