In which we help @RaceProUK switch to Chrome
-
Continuing the discussion from A Deeply Nested Mystery:
Maybe I should just switch to Chrome after allโฆ
so, you mentioned the only reason you're still on BloatFox is extensions... so what extensions are keeping you from switching? if we know that we can help you find replacements for them in Chrome.
:-D
-
Whatever you do, don't click on this.
-
The ones I definitely want are:
- AdBlock Plus
- FireGestures
- Flashblock
- GreaseMonkey
- HTTPS Everywhere
- LastPass
- NoScript
- Stylish
- XMarks
I know LastPass and XMarks exist for Chrome; they exist for all browsers.
There are others, but they're either seldom used or installed alongside other stuff; I can live without them.

Why would you want that as a browser extension?
For some reason, I typed that instead of GreaseMonkey
-
Fail. Chrome has Tampermonkey.
-
FireGestures
<insert obligatory Opera fanboy rant here>
Also, just to point out, even this new Chropera crap supports gestures out of the box, though I don't know what mapping you're used to because I think they are hardcoded.
Also, there's a way to load Chrome extensions into it if an Opera-specific one is missing.

not entirely sure about this one but:

NoScript
Is there something like this for Chrome / Firefox? It's damned useful for testing:
Or does NoScript cover all of that?
Edit: Actually, I test WebKit stuff in Opera anyway, so if there's a FF one that's enough for me.
-
hmm... interesting.... not sure. but damn that would be handy.
-
I love the first sentence in the description:
Site-specific Preferences brings back some of Opera 12's features for changing per-site settings.
It's almost like us trying to "fix" Discourse
-
well now that opera is webkit based it should be possible to get that plugin into chrome....
-
Likely. There's actually an easy way to do it the other way around already:
https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/download-chrome-extension-9/?display=en
I'm pretty sure you can just load it manually, but hey :P

NoScript
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/scriptsafe/oiigbmnaadbkfbmpbfijlflahbdbdgdf?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialogI'll second ScriptSafe.
I was going to be first to suggest it but I got Hanzo'd while including a complaint that now Quote Reply doesn't show on Android until after you click the regular reply button (and your highlight is gone). And a complaint that Discourse failed to stream in a post when the topic only had 6 posts in it. A lot of complaining from me this morning, to be honest.
And now a complaint that Swype is trolling me with awful suggestions when I'm going over the right letters for the words I want.

Does Google use keyboard-banging techniques to produce unique URLs?
-
i have no idea.... but that keyboard mash is required...
-
Does Google use keyboard-banging techniques to produce unique URLs?
I think that's how @accalia types too.
-
it's hard to use these
to operate machines designed for these
-
Source maps: Chrome >>> Firefox
Seriously there's some bug in Firefox that makes it sends like 300+ requests to get the source maps, locking up the browser
-
Flashblock
Pretty sure that's built in. At least I've been able to get by with the built in controls.
-
Swype
Well there's your problem...
(Google Keyboard/AOSP Keybord/NextApp master race!)
-
-
BloatFox
Instead of bloating, Chrome just leaves processes around, holding memory handles and such, never budging, never caring about that game you're trying to play.
Does Chrome have a "Kill all of me, cause I'm a sneaky bitch" button somewhere?
-
Does Chrome have a "Kill all of me, cause I'm a sneaky bitch" button somewhere?
yes but they do a good job of hiding it...
(that's right click on the notification area icon... which is probably collapsed behind the arrow thingie)
-
Except if Chrome decides to lock up....
TASKKILL /IM chrome.exe /F
maybe this will do?Actually, I wonder if that "Let Google Chrome run in the background" switch will do it for me.
My problem is I close Chrome to free up resources for my game, but oh no, Chrome doesn't close.... Chrome never closes.... it's just there.... always there. All 200 processes.
-
Actually, I wonder if that "Let Google Chrome run in the background" switch will do it for me.
probably will. ;-)
-
At this point, Chrome should just make an OS.
Seriously.
I mean, all the features it's doing would be easier and consume less resources baked into an OS.
Hold on.... got a text message.
Oh.....
-
-
Yeah, but why do they want to turn their desktop browser into a smartphone?
Your feature crossover bleed is making my PC slower!!!
I don't want a multimedia platform on my PC, or a chat platform.
I already have a cellphone and a TV.
I just wanted to open up my browser to look at a hint for the game I'm trying to play..... and you put my game under 30 frames per second, because you're building a damned framework for a cellphone.
-
-
Everything you need is right there in one clean, continuous scroll.
Discoursed-ed-ed!
Beleted!
Is this some kind of overlay, or does it replace Android?
It can't be replacing Android, they'd have to convince the cell companies to build overlays for that crap.:discofused:
-
Yeah, but why do they want to turn their desktop browser into a smartphone?
they're making ChromeOS in a phone?
or are you talking anout Android?
i'm genuinely confuzzled at your train of thought here.
-
they're making ChromeOS in a phone?
No, they're making their browser more like a smart-device experience, with apps and such built in.
-
Do these ones and I might switch

https://addons.mozilla.org/es/firefox/addon/download-youtube/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flash-video-downloader/
-
TASKKILL /IM chrome.exe /F
I've had to do that a lot.
But then again, that was on my machine when it was running at ~70% RAM usage prior to me actually starting anything. Now I get along fine...
-

got to say i've never had much of an issue with memory usage with chrome.... not even when discourse is using 2GB each tab and i have three tabs open.
but then having 64GB of ram will do that...
-
It might not be as convenient, but this thing is awesome.
-

Wat.
@accalia said:but then having 64GB of ram will do that...
Oh. Well. You lucky little...FWIW, I don't care about Chrome's memory usage either - I do fine with my 24 gigs...
-
Oh. Well. You lucky little...
work desktop. home only has 32.
i love shopping for computers when i'm not the one holding the credit card!
-
-
-
My home PC has a mere 8GBโฆ
ditto.
If I try to run a heavy memory game like an MMO or Skyrim, I have to close the browser.
-
I have a Galaxy S5 without any carrier branding.
It just got shipped with 3 Czech newspaper apps.
-
yes but they do a good job of hiding it...
I don't have Chrome in the Notification area - it just closes when I close all open windows.
-
That makes me wonder...
Does Discourse have a
MAX_TITLE_SIZE
orMAX_LINK_SIZE
?Filed Under: the evil ideas thread is...
-
I don't have Chrome in the Notification area - it just closes when I close all open windows.
then you never gave it background permission.... or revoked it.
there's somewhere under settings you cna enable that if you want it...
-
Why the fuck would you?!
-
Why the fuck would you?!
given that i use hangouts for texting i'd like to get text notifications even if i don't have any chrome windows open.
beyond that...... maybe you want faster startup and you like shinies so much that you have enough memory that the memory footprint isn't an issue?
-
HANZOOOOOOO!
