Put another way, "wasting vertical space".
Hey, I found some space!

Actually, if you have enough text to wrap, then you probably have long-enough posts that the per-post overhead doesn't matter as much as font size, which isn't a great idea to reduce all of the time. (If you decide it's a good idea, fine! But that's irrelephant.)
The idea is to make reading lots of one-line, two-line, a quote an a line, etc posts easier.

why not make it a native feature?
Don't. Jeff will suddenly decide that instead of adding a button, they all need removing or something equally Jefftardedâ˘.

i think the discopaedia needs a new entry (if it's not already there)

Swipe gestures are the only sensible answer, of course.

It's there now. Wikification pending the TL4 "Discocooldown".

On a forum populated by people who work in an industry with seemingly impenetrable jargon, we created out own impenetrable jargon.
It's impenetrable jargon all the way down I guess...

So it's not actually cooling, but getting warmer?

Somewhere someone walks by an isolation cell in an nondescript asylum.
There is a room with a smudged name. Only the first three letters are legible....
T.... A.... R.......
From within can be heard a voice saying, "Smash game, smash game, smash game...."
They say this room has been occupied by the same patient for 30 years. Occasionally you'll hear the person mumble something about "compiling" or "debugging", or they'll make typing gestures in midair and laugh.

Someone notices the patient lift up their arms and smile a wide smile. Childlike humming can be heard from within.
