GAIM WTF
-
Is this a case of one hand not knowing what the other is doing?
Minor, but mildly amusing.
-
Multiple accounts bug perhaps?
In any case, Gaim is lousy. Kopete easily beats it, but is KDE-only at present; a windows port may show in the next year.

Gaim has been screwing up lately. It's been doing the same thing to me, telling me random friends have logged out while I'm talking to them and then they tell me I've logged out. I actually think MSNM updated or changed their service and Gaim has yet to match it because Kompete is having similar problems for me, I'm running Xubuntu (Ubuntu with XFCE)

Miranda for the win!
I switched over to Miranda about a year ago. Gaim was having WAY to many problems and all sorts of bugs. Miranda had a nice slew of bugs this year though, and three updates in ONE DAY! It looks like they got most of them fixed though because the newest build hasn't given me a single problem.
My current vote is with Miranda. It doesn't have a bloated feel that alot of IM clients have.

Meh, I've heartily enjoyed using Trillian: www.trillian.cc
Never liked GAIM, always felt like a personal project released for the hell of it.

In terms of not being bloated I think irssi + bitlbee is as close to nirvana as you can get, and it's what I've been using for a year now.
I can't really say how much mem the bitlbee part of irssi is using (irssi is some 27m, most of which is the long history buffers that I have), but bitlbee is using some 1448 kB ;)

I've recently stumbled upon lite aim (http://x.aim.com/laim/)
It's still made by aol, but it's not nearly as bloated as the current "mainstream" aim client. Very small memory footprint and it's easily skinnable with xml :)

LMFAO you mean they released a product call 'laim'?
That is just so... well... LAME!

No, LAME is a totally different piece of software, and it isn't developed by AOL.

Your geek cred goes down by 10 points. Gaim and Miranda are both GPL.
-
WTF? AOL releasing software that isn't hopelessly bloated?

Geek points are awarded to someone who knowingly use an inferior product? Awesome.

Geek points are awarded for being Free.

the linux version of GAIM is better than the Windows version. BTW, Trillian is a terrible piece of software. Using it makes me want to stab my computer.
-
Since we're having an IM client holy war, allow me to add my 2 cents.
I've been a big fan of Psi (http://psi.affinix.com/), which does everything I need very well, although for Linux, I've recently moved to gajim (gajim.org) because it uses the same widgets as all of my other applications. I hate the name 'gajim' though.
I've never liked GAIM, Trillian or Miranda. Of the three, GAIM is the lesser of the evils.
-
Is there any way to get Psi to work on non-Jabber networks like AIM or MSN?
-
I got Miranda.
Sad though, that every time I check -- there's some kind of update. And I have this botched MSN used addition which generated a dead (unclickable) entry in my address list. So that's not pretty. But other than that, Miranda FTW (I'm leaving file transfers out of the loop because I was rarely able to send a file to an [im client] user even if I used [im client] itself)!

I use this neat client called AIM.
edit: not Triton, ew. 5.0!
