IIRC, it changed channels throughout its run, so it was hard to watch all of the episodes. I know that I've missed quite a few.
-
yeah, and none of the channels i get over the air carry it anymore.
-
Who watchs shows on TV anymore?
-
good point.
-
I usually watch Doctor Who on television. Well, I would if I could avoid crazy people in the living room, so I watch the live simulcast of BBC One in my bedroom. Does that count?
-
Last week's episode was the first episode this season I really enjoyed :D Just as I was considering jumping ship for a few seasons to see if it gets better, it got better.

Last week's episode was the first episode this season I really enjoyed
The season got off to a rough start but this is the best doctor of the new show, because he's the least unlike the old show.
I felt the same way about Missy, until we got
another fucking plot to kill everyone on Earth, apparently solely out of spite for the Doctor.
The original series had him having a much wider range of evil plans: for example, he killed the fourth Doctor by shaking him off a radiotelescope, in a plot to get himself declared ruler of the universe.

I'm guessing that you watch a lot of CBS.
It's possible. It's mostly DVR'd stuff, so I'm not always aware of where stuff comes from. Some of it I know is ABC or SyFy. And some from USA. Obviously, boxing is mostly HBO or Showtime, though NBC actually has some good stuff on their sports channel.
-
I never watched the old show (maybe that's the problem). I just haven't managed to get a feel for what 13 is like. Every episode he seems to behave differently. With this past one I feel like I get him now.
-
Every episode he seems to behave differently.
Nope--he's actually pretty consistent. Go back and watch them all, and pay attention to the first episode where he talks about his mistakes and wonders if he's a good man. He's got layers: the first is "irascible." Under that, he cares about his companions, enough to accept Clara's betrayal, because he understood why she did it. This guy, in many ways, is Grouchy Tom Baker. He's poking around the universe and fixing crap he run into. Pay close attention to the things he does, like the way he forced Clara to make a choice in that silly moon episode, instead of doing it for her: he's also the grouchy guardian who's going to make you grow up even if you don't like that, but all those layers aren't obvious at first glance.
ETA: Even Danny got that; witness the episode where the Doctor goes to the school--at the end, Danny tells Clara the Doctor's making sure enough Danny's good enough for her. He's trying to, among other things, see if he's emotionally mature.

I'm still waiting for the season of Doctor Who that is nothing but him going back in time and setting up all of the deus ex machinas that save his ass over the last 60 years.
He's the greatest hero of time and space! "Why is he so heroic?" Usually because of extremely unlikely coincidences and pure fucking luck!
-
I'm still waiting for the season of Doctor Who that is nothing but him going back in time and setting up all of the deus ex machinas that save his ass over the last 60 years.
That was "The Name of the Doctor"
Nope--he's actually pretty consistent. Go back and watch them all
Like I said, I wasn't understanding what they were trying to portray until this past episode. Now that I get it, the previous ones will probably make more sense.
ETA: I guess what's going on here is your reading of "the first episode I really enjoyed" to mean "the first episode that was good". I look forward to rewatching this season on DVD, but it lost me the first time through since I never really grokked what he was thinking at any point so it looked like random dickishness.
-
That was "The Name of the Doctor"
Oh yeah I guess they kind of did do that. In a 1-minute montage.
I want a full fucking SEASON DAMNIT!!!!!
-
Missy
I really hoped it was the Rani...
Then I felt stupid due to the obvious hint...
-
I joked last week that it would be
a future Doctor screwing with him ala Time Heist.
:) That was probably my best guess. (Incorrect, but spoilered anyway just in case)
-
I heard, no joke, some people theorizing that Mary Poppins is a Time Lady (Seriously, is that a new thing? Were they called Time Ladies in the classic show[s]?), and that Missy is actually Mary Poppins...
-
It was implied on the show that "Time Lady" was "old-fashioned" and therefore that "Time Lord" could go for both genders. Much like "flight attendant" vs "stewardess".
-
"Time Lord" could go for both genders
That's what I assumed, yes. Then again, I only saw bits and pieces of the classic Doctor so I can't claim any proper knowledge.
-
Oh, Time Lady, I speak Jive!
-
Missy
I really hoped it was the Rani...
You know what? So did I! Or else
Romana
, which would've been interesting.
-
I'm still waiting for the season of Doctor Who that is nothing but him going back in time and setting up all of the deus ex machinas that save his ass over the last 60 years.
That's really River Song's thing, though.
-
And not, say, Clara jumping into his timestream?
-
so it looked like random dickishness.
Yes, that's true. I really liked the original show and I've been watching this one closely and analyzing it in real-time, especially when the talk came that Capaldi's Doctor would be different from the last three. It took until about halfway through episode three when I started to realize how it worked; it took a bit longer to realize what was going on under the dickishness.

When will Doctor Who be as good as The Big Bang Theory?
:runs for cover:
-
when i get around to watching either one (i was really into the old series, just haven't been able to summon enthusiasm for new series yet. and big bang is just... i'm not up to date at all in americana)
-
and big bang is just... i'm not up to date at all in americana
Started to lean towards "meh" near the end of the season one for me. Stopped watching. From things I heard, I made a wise choice.
-
I live on a "if you asked the question you deserve the truth" system, which is why it is always a good idea to think carefully if i ever ask you "are you sure you want the answer to that?" because that's the only warning you are going to get that i think you might not like the answer.
This!! So much this!
I honestly don't get people who get angry because you've answered the question they just asked, but the answer is not what they wanted to hear.
If you don't want to know the answer, don't ask the fucking question. If you do ask the question, be aware that the answer might not be what you want it to be.Not being offended by an answer is the repsonsibility of the asker, not the askee1.
1 assuming the askee replies in an objective, non-offensive way. Delivering an unwelcome answer with extra insults or agressive words is just being a dick.
-
I honestly don't get people who get angry because you've answered the question they just asked, but the answer is not what they wanted to hear.
i don't understand it either, but that is why i will ask the "are you sure" question before answering questions that touch on known sensitive areas.
-
i don't understand it either, but that is why i will ask the "are you sure" question before answering questions that touch on known sensitive areas.
IME even asking that question doesn't help all that much in others being offended or hurt when they get the answer they were not looking for. The kind of people that assume your answer will be exactly what they want to hear are the same people that don't understand that "are you sure?" means "no responsibility accepted when the answer is not to your liking".
People who do realize that it's their responsibility of not asking questions that they actually don't want to know the answer to usually don't need the extra "are you sure?" warning.
-
i didn't say it always works. but it is remarkably effective the second+ time i use it. ;-)
-
"Are you sure you want to know?" implies "You [do not / might not] want to know" so I just go with "You don't want to know" when I know the answer isn't what they want, which makes the warning more clear.
People ask anyway, obviously, but after the warning that's their problem.

When will Doctor Who be as good as The Big Bang Theory?
:runs for cover:
Um... when DW has fallen to irredeemably bad levels like during the end of the Seventh Doctor's run? Cuz seriously, DW will have to fall badly to be down to the terribad standards of TBBT.
I am damn well not Sheldon Cooper and the sooner the show dies and people stop comparing me to Sheldon the fucking better.
-
whooooooooooooosh
-
I realised where you were going, I just chose to ignore you because bashing TBBT is sport for me.
-
I refuse to give it that much thought.
-
When you've had a number of people both online and offline calling you Sheldon, you tend to take it a little more personally.
-
Whatever you say, @Sheldon.
-
Where's my PHP hammer?
-
-
i've got a framing hammer i can lend you. also a clue bat.
-
If only you knew.
-
I think that you're also whooshing.
-
i've got a framing hammer i can lend you. also a clue bat.
Yes, some of these people need clue-by-fours. So deserving.
-
i'm missing that from my arsenal. i lent it out a couple of months ago and haven't gotten it back.
-
I can neither confirm nor deny that allegation at this time.
-
i'm missing that from my arsenal. i lent it out a couple of months ago and haven't gotten it back.
Load up your cluebat and go get it.
-
nah. the person who borrowed it is cute...
-
Then ask them nicely for the clue-by-four back and if they're deserving of being called cute, they will return it nicely.
