Although, in their defense, they give a good reason for it. Apparently being stuck somewhere without a scanner. I kinda like the effect anyway. The content itself is a little WTFy, I think Tycho might enjoy reading some of the less "intense geek" stories we have here. :-)

For this one I see a reason, to make it looking more like it was handmade and not draw on a computer.
But I have used this trick once or twice. I have no scanner (the lamp of my old scanner blew) but I have a pretty good digital camera, so I took pictures of the paper I needed to keep.
