Bug (or feature...?)
-
- Open a topic
- Middle mouse click to get the up/down/left/right scrolliness
- Use mouse 4 to go back
- Mouse is still scrolliness
That's different. (Required: Mousewheel, mouse4 button associated with browser 'back')
-
Bug. Doesn't happen on other sites.
-
I have the feeling this would be a no-repro if you had real page navigation, but because of the AJAX reloading, I suspect it's because Discourse isn't pre-empting enough of the browser behaviour.
-
2) Middle mouse click to get the up/down/left/right scrolliness
Middle click opens a new tab on links here. It does nothing for me on the green post counter.

The middle-click should not occur on a link, post counter, or pretty much any content. Do it in whitespace.
-
If you middle click when you're not on a link... what happens then? Because I get a scrolling thingy.
At least Discourse doesn't hijack middle-click-not-on-a-link to show/hide navigation elements.
-
BUG: middle-clicking on blank space does not cornify current thread.

Oh - that. Nothing - ignore my post.

Can't screenshot my mouse pointer so:
(..... What is that upload link meant to do? It didn't let me upload an image. Mobile discourse is trwtf)

The upload feature works (reasonably well) on (desktop) but you can upload to imgur and
onebox itHave it stolen byuploaded by discourse

...I need a second phone to take a bootleg screenshot of my phone on a wooden table :'(
-
This bug requires mouse4, so what the hell are you doing on your phone?
-
What is that upload link meant to do?
-
Taking a picture of my mouse pointer that doesn't show up in screenshots, of course :) See my edit
-
-
Only now I need a second phone so I can screenshot the non-working upload link on my android phone. Preferably an iphone so I could take comparative screenshots each way.
(I'd use our Sauce Labs account, but it'd show up in the history and I'd get weird questions)

Tell them that it's for a CNR issue, that wouldn't make things worse

2) Middle mouse click to get the up/down/left/right scrolliness
You're doing it wrong. @<sd>codingwhorror does not use middle mouse click, so it clearly shouldn't even be possible.
-
I was debating whether or not to include instructions for the ball mouse, but I don't have one so repro steps might be unreliable.
-
You won.

Sigh.

Translation - I don't like it so fuck the people that do. Maybe if I break it badly enough, they won't like it anymore either.

If you read the thread, you can see @Matches arguing that @sam should find a way to send keystrokes to the browser's UI using JavaScript.
-
No, that was just the final recommendation when they threw up their hands saying 'IUNNO!'

@Matches suggesting something dumb doesn't make Jeff's burning desire to break all built-in UI functionality any smarter.
-
Hey, my first suggestion was to trap the middle mouse click event and cancel it on trapping the back button event.
-
Okay, let's think carefully here.
You push the back button.
Then you middle click.
Wait, middle clicking didn't work! Why is Discourse broken?
Because @Matches told us to block the first middle click after the back button is pushed.
-
On my home computer, Chrome 36+ logitech mouse, middle click scroll works a million times better than wheel/regular scroll. So much better that it may become my method for navigating this infiniscroll garbage. It seems to have less lag with the middleclick+slowdownscroll than repeatedly spinning the scrollwheel down.
-
Mainly because I can set it at the exact speed at which I can read and keep up, then leave it there and read the entire topic straight through without as much herky-jerkiness.
Though I bet it still fails to work smoothly at the tail end of the Likes Topic or any topic with people posting while you're trying to scroll.
-
To be clear: Middle click scrolling isn't the weird edge case. Middle click scrolling and then leaving the page without left, right, or middle clicking is the weird edge case.
-
You're bad at this game. I'm proposing a boolean flag 'is middle mouse clicked because we are circumventing all normal browser features'
If true and a back navigation event is seen, cancel the navigation event.
Because of how events work, that event should get canceled on some other event triggering the scrolling event.
-
FFS. Just... FFS.

Have you tried pressing Volume Down and Power simultaneously?
On my pre-4.0 phone I can screenshot through the menu that comes up holding down Power.

The Palm Swipe would have been a trendy name for a phone, especially one prone to theft, had the company not being borged.

Translation - I don't like it so fuck the people that do. Maybe if I break it badly enough, they won't like it anymore either.
Better translation: I have an Mac so there is no mouse wheel. If I can't have mouse wheel then so can't you.
-
My Chromebook doesn't have a middle mouse button. I can three-finger-tap for middle click, but scrolling is two-finger-swipe. On my PC I can't remember the last time I used middle click scroll. Different people use different hardware differently.
-
Exactly and yet Jeff rules that because it's different, it's done wrong.
-
I personally make significantly heavy use of middle mouse, AND the drag scrollbar. I'm a heathen, I know.

No, you're just Doing It Wrong according to the Gospels of TCotCDCK.
-
How about me?
I disabled two-finger-scrolling and switched back to early 2000s edge-scrolling!
And gave my clickpad a virtual middle mouse button.
-
So Jeff has spoken, so must it be wrong.
Still, at least comfort yourself with the fact that Jeff didn't decide to show/hide navigation menus on middle click.
-
Does your early 2000 edge scrolling work? I had an early 2000 laptop with edge scrolling. I don't think it worked correctly one single time.
-
Yes it does! Both on my current laptop and my previous one.
-
I was more bemused that he linked to an article complaining about getting a scrollbar when you miss a link with middle mouse click.
How inaccurate can you be with a mouse to miss links with middle mouse click?
-

It's actually rather easy to miss links in a site that uses dicksores. The way stuff jumps around when it's updating the DOM, the link that was under your mouse when you press the button may be elsewhere when you release it.

Except the quoted post was made before discourse was a thing, I think.

I also think this autoscroll feature was custom made by firefox, and if you disabled it, it would revert to the OS behavior.
Also, that article quotes codinghorrors blog...
