MODERN DESIGN by DISCOURSE
-
I just came across this: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/07/the-software-design-trends-that-we-love-to-hate/
Where the people of Ars Technica make some comments on the modern software design. It just struck me how Discourse appears to follow modern design, probably part of Jeff's 10 year plan.- Too-flat, text-only "buttons": bonus points for making stuff hard to find
- A dearth of density: my browsers window sometimes looks only 2/3s filled with content
- Excessive translucency: I bet Jeff would like to make those toasters and the reply fly-out translucent.
- Menus that can't turn off the Caps Lock: Since this one seems to be lacking I thought I would make it up with some all caps topic title.

Oh, a paginated forum. How nice!

Most of the menus on Ars Technica seem to enjoy the caps lock button. They've taken a rather bizarre mix n match approach which is almost worse.

It'll never catch on. Not now, and not in 10 years.

Yup, looks more modern. Definitely an improvement.
-
ew. I think I threw up a little.
-
Are those Unicode icons capitalized?

Menus that can't turn off the Caps Lock
OH YEAH, THAT MAKES TYPING ALL THIS STUFF MUCH EASIER.

HOW DID YOU FIX DISCOURSE SO THAT THE CAPS LOCK KEY WORKS?

HOW DID YOU FIX DISCOURSE SO THAT THE CAPS LOCK KEY WORKS?
Magic, I believe. And judicious copy/pasting of
to defeat the anti-anti-troll features.
-
Comments can hide many things.
-
I just think it's hilarious that a single
in the code will neutralise seemingly any amount of otherwise shouting.
-
It's a losing battle to automate stuff like this, and simple tests probably fix 90% of the problem. The people around here, of course, will go out of their way for system abuse, just because. I think their solution is reasonable for what it's meant to do.
-
YOU DON'T EVEN NEED IT lF YOUR SENTENCE HAS A LETTER "I" THAT CAN BE SUBSTITUTED WITH A LOWERCASE L IN DISGUISE.
-
That's the thing, is such a system actually needed? I've seen it done (and done it myself) for topic titles but generally too many capitals didn't tend to be a problem in the topics themselves.
Oh wait, I forget, we're using Jeff's definition of civilised communication on the web. I'm surprised it doesn't complain if there's a lack of punctuation in posts. Or too much.
-
Yes, I think it's a reasonable thing, in general. For users here, an all caps post is probably on purpose, and yelling a rant is entirely appropriate. I think the real point is to catch people who just type everything in caps by default.
I don't think it's a must-have feature for forum software, and including such a feature or not are both defensible positions.
-
That's just it... I've been hovering in the SMF community literally for years at this point in time, and the number of times it comes up as a request... I can't remember it ever coming up for the body of a topic. But I did for topic titles, more than once.

Actually, it does. Discourse refused to accept this post with the error message "Body is invalid; try to be a little more descriptive".Remembering @Akismet, I prepared myself for a longer trial-and-error phase, but I was pleasantly dissapointed: all it took was a single lower case "a" to be "more descriptive".
Long live the Discourse way of fostering more civilized discourse!
-
Body is invalid is usually because of allcaps not because a lack of punctuation
EDIT: above was accepted just fine without punctuation. Also, Akismet is fairly terrible for the purpose for which it was designed, and is significantly worse in anything even remotely outside that.

That's a very @codinghorror thing to say.

I did wonder why you were talking about hats...

Also, the translator turned my sad face into a happy face. I think it's buggy.

Discourse is a barrier to communicating in Morse!
-
It is, and I feel ill that I'm saying it, but on the other hand, that's simply been my experience.
-
Hah, that brought back memories of way too much time wasted reading bash.org:
#835030 +(20811)- [X] <Khassaki> HI EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!! <Judge-Mental> try pressing the the Caps Lock key <Khassaki> O THANKS!!! ITS SO MUCH EASIER TO WRITE NOW!!!!!!! <Judge-Mental> fuck me

Or plus. Or asterisk. Or <li>... oh, no, wait, that's a legitimate one.

I found it hilarious to have to self-escape to use characters as ASCII intended.

YOU ARE CHEATING BY USING LOWER CASE HTML ELEMENTS.

YES BUT THOSE ELEMENTS ONLY SHOW UP IN THE REPLY+QUOTE BUTTON METHOD.
YOU ARE CHEATING BY QUOTING MY LOWER CASE ELEMENTS!
NO WORSE THAN YOUR METHOD.

FINE I WILL NOT QUOTE YOU
-
You missed some:
It was only a one-liner CSS - not sure why they're not changing, and CBA to dig.
-
* { text-transform:uppercase !important; }
There's a one liner that won't miss anything (unless something more specific also does a text-transform !important).
-
button,select{ text-transform:none }
I just stuck mine in
html
.
-
That's why I included the !important, so it'd bypass those.
