Side bar WTF on the WTF side bar

We seem to be getting amazon 'targetted' advertising on the daily WTF. What better to recommend to a big bunch of nerds than a cher fitness video, pregnancy fitness and tai chi for kids. A WTF on the WTF site - oh the irony :)
-
From what I recall, Amazon ads sniff your Amazon cookies so they will present stuff related to what you have been buying or looking for. Has your wife been using your PC to buy fitness stuff?
More importantly: where are you seeing Amazon ads on TDWTF?
-
-
well, i get ads for computer books and computer spare parts ( as Shamboo ) .
Maybe because i'm a programmer.
So, MET, i guess you must be female, pregnant and maybe a bit fatty. :)

Hehe sorry for being pedantic, but tae kwon do != tai chi
Anyway, if I can't be pedantic on thedailywtf, where can I be pedantic? ;)
-
I'm seeing Amazon ads on the sidebar, too, and they're all products I've recently browsed at amazon.com. Gotten pregnant lately?
-
LOL :) This is my work PC, and as far as I know I am not pregnant. I am sure it would be a shock to my wife if I was!
If I go to amazon.co.uk or amazon.com it does not remember me so I obviously don't have any of their cookies - I tend to look at amazon when I am at home. Nothing on the front page of the sites are in the list I posted so I think this must be their default assumptions when they have nothing specific to recommend, or it was picked up by some words on the page of comments I was reading.

I promise I have no idea how this one got there:

Riiiight. And we're supposed to believe that.
Mine is showing...
MySQL/PHP Database Applications. Normal..
The Bostrom Conspiracy. I don't know this one, so no comment.
Outlaw Biker Magazine. <sarcasm>I've always wanted to join Hell's Angels.</sarcasm>
MySQL/PHP Database Applications, 2nd... First and second edition in the same ad.
Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa. I'd really like to know what is making it suggest things like this.

Some weird ones here as well (and, yet again, it's my work computer)......Racor Ceiling Mounted Bike Lift #PBH...

I think you may have nailed it! One of my co-workers bought a motorcycle at the end of last year, and another one has owned one for a while.
That's a little odd that someone can get recommendations based on what someone else is doing on the same IP.

You guys see ads?

<FONT face=Verdana>Are products listed on Amazon.com Associate Web sites through this linking service the same as the personalized recommendations I receive when visiting Amazon.com?</FONT>
They can be. The products you see listed when visiting an Amazon Associate's site can be based on a variety of factors, such as that site's topics and sales history. We might also show you items based on your own personal purchase history at Amazon.com. The Associate Web site hosting this Amazon.com link does not have access to these "personalized" recommendations.

Is everyone getting biker magazines, or do you two work at the same place? =P

So it could be the text on the page...
"Learning programming is like learning anything else. You have to start at the basics. Much like you won't be able to ride a bike without first being able to identify what a bike is and how you make it go, you'll need to know some of the essentials before whipping up your first "hello world."
Is there a mention of nudity recently in the WTFs?

No, but there was a mention of whipping in your quote... (I also like that the MySQL book is written by Brad Bulger -- clearly a developer who moonlights as a pr0n star.)

Yep, I disabled AdBlock, and here we are. Books about Windows Presentation Foundation programming. Might be because I just bought one from amazon...
So it's definitely tracking what you bought on associate sites.
Let's kick AdBlock back in now...
-
Hmm never been to amazon in my life. No wait ... nope never been.
Yes, i've been looking for a book on radiation effects, it can be quite sunny here in townsville. Pitty about the shipping.
-
Was never before on amazon either.

In light of the recent story, this raises some questions...

On an unrelated note, if you are a kid and get this as a present, I think it's a clear sign your parents don't love you anymore...
