Not really sure this is a WTF but it doens't make a lot of sense anyway.

It's not a WTF.
Yahoo and MSN have shaken hands and decided to offer interoperability on the two platforms. Which means you can use Yahoo! Messenger to chat with people on the MSN Messenger platform without having to run MSN Messenger or even create a new MSN ID. The new functionality has been launched as beta.MSN will be launching a beta shortly as well. I guess it's got to do with Google's idea of "service choice" where you should be able to IM anyone on any IM network using the IM network of your choice (just like email, e.g.).

I guess that means I only need one now. or just keep using trillian

Blecch. I stopped using MSN Messenger after the banner-ad-encrusted interface of version 6. I use Google Talk now - clean, simple, effective, and it even supports voice chat. The interface is (like everything google) uncluttered, simple, and well-designed (I guess the engineers designed this one, and left the marketing people out of it!). There are no useless "floopy" animations (like the two spinning sphere-people while you are signing in), and no advertising anywhere.

Try Windows Messenger instead.

I'm hoping that day comes soon. I once knew a guy who had something like four different messenger clients running at the same time. Not sure he actually got much work done...

That would be the case already if everyone finally started, you know, using Jabber...
