I think I've seen pictures of the Amazon or some of its tributaries that have cut-off meanders like that, so that's my guess.

You forgot one of the biggest: Testing-In-Production.
Oh how the customers laughed when they had to ship everything back for us to reprogram the hardware. It wasn't my code though, I'm not suicidal enough to roll my own time/date library.
