@topspin What? And not have parts that don't quite fit together? And not have parts with weird stability issues you spend days reading denverposts and testing, and still can't find what's going on? And no overpriced Twin Fusion Ultra Pro parts? And not cuting yourself repeatedly while you're putting it all together? And finally, despite your best efforts still not looking nowhere near like those spiffy builds you saw on reddit?
-
@Applied-Mediocrity must’ve hit a nerve.
-
@topspin Yes. Yes, it did
-
-
@boomzilla Hitman comes to mind.
-
@Rhywden getting a very nice suit? Not a bad idea.
-
Not sure about the bald part, even less sure about the back-of-the-head tattoo part.
-
@Arantor I'm not sure about even the killing random people for money part.
I mean, the games mostly made you kill Hitler's apprentices. But real life hits are mostly jealous husbands wanting to waste their wife and her (ostensible) lover.
-
@boomzilla Fun fact: Real marines like to play Call of Duty too. Apparently the day-to-day marine life is more reminiscent of Death Stranding. Actual combat is a rarity unless you happen to enlist a year before U.S. joins a war somewhere. And it's more fun to do on a screen anyway.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity I'm just too and nowadays. Screw custom builds. I'll do my custom build by , Submit
-
@acrow yeah but if you’re going to end up as a properly qualified, trained hitman in a nice suit and red tie, you’re not going to be taking the odd $10k to knock off a jealous spouse, that’s just moonlighting from getting out and actually killing neo-Nazis and the like.
At least if you follow the premise of the tweet…

@dcon I don’t even customise like that any more, I just buy a new gaming laptop every 4-5 years to stay current. Don’t have the room to put a gaming rig in to be honest, unless I went console so I could sit on the sofa and play.

gaming laptop
Recently considered. In case I'd have to pack up fast (because of certain events that shall remain unspecified). But they're all kind of gaudy. They've always been a bit, but lately more than ever.

Or Pacman for that matter. Run around dark rooms munching pills and listening to electronic music.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity I have an MSI GE Raider, I thought the light bar and RGB backlit keys would be obnoxious but you can turn it off if you want. I personally found myself liking it.

I just wait until my employer says it's time I can get a new one.
Filed under: where do I hand in my card
-
@topspin if I did that I’d have spent 4 years trying to game on Ubuntu Linux on an older Thinkpad. Yeah, nah.

To be fair, I'm not gaming on a Macbook either. But who has time for that, anyway.
(It did come with 3 free months of Apple Arcade, which I've used 0 times exactly, and 12 free months of Apple TV+, on which I've seen one movie and half a season of one TV show)
-
@topspin these days I'd be gaming on an M1 if I used my employer-provided device but I have no idea what graphics chippery it has.
But the emulation layer for x86 is probably fast enough it can run all the retro shit I like, and Guild Wars 2 if I settle for lower quality graphics.

For non-performance sensitive stuff it is basically transparent. You can only tell if you look it up. No idea about games, I'd guess there's other issues.

Respawning is a little more difficult IRL.

The GPU is also M1. It's all M1! And if you want a game with native M1 support, there are a few. Like World of Warcraft.

@Arantor Yeeeah, it's fine that you're happy with yours, but stuff like the Raider was exactly what I meant. I did eventually arrive at GS76 Stealth as such, but the model with a 3080 and a QHD screen is nowhere to be found. I'm a terribly nitpicky m/f (well, I am posting here after all).

If anything that suggests low standards

See, @loopback0, this is the standard of content quality that I hope to provide and that I expect in return here.

@boomzilla That really depends on whether there's a word limit or page limit for the paper. When you're restricted, cutting out the bullshit filler is one of the easier ways to get in under the wire…
-
@dkf oh, you're one of those.
-
@boomzilla you seem surprised by this apparent revelation.
-
-
@topspin Oh yeah. That's the one I missed - the car.
-
@dcon My old car radio was easy — press one button while holding another. Figuring out which button to hold and which to press, not so much, but I had it for over 20 years, so even though I never quite remembered, I usually guessed right on the first try. My new (to me) car, I don't have a clue, yet.
-
@dcon My car's media center clock gets auto-synced with the phone (iirc), or was at least very easy to change. The clock on the dashboard is however not affected by the clock in the media center, and I have not figured how to update the dash clock yet (would look at manual, but ).
-
@dcon The problem with the clock in the car is that I only realise it still needs to be adjusted after I've already driven away.
-
My car actually auto adjusts. It's about 5 minutes slow unless I'm using Android Auto, but the hour is right.

Mine's easy, too easy. Just press a button on the console.

I had that too.
Now however it is unfunny and uses radio waves to eventually get to the current time.
-
I've solved this particular problem by not having a car.
My girlfriend has solved it by asking me to adjust the clock in her car.
-
@HardwareGeek only a little.

I have a similar problem. I can set a target temperature in the media system but it doesn't get synced to the actual heating system.

@topspin said in The Official Funny Stuff Thread™:
We have a clock in the LR that switched a day early.
It was driving my husband crazy. He asked why it wasn't bothering me, I can't see the clock from my spot on the couch.
-
@topspin said in The Official Funny Stuff Thread™:
I'm convinced this didn't happen. I haven't had to change any clocks.
