Witchcraft not sufficient to understand octal numbers

@Weng And neither one took place!
-
So, TRTRWTF is Discourse?
-
@_P_ You've only been here a few months, so you missed the fun. If you want to catch up, you might start with this thread: https://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/17231/wtf-how-can-this-be-so-wrong-aka-the-discopocalypse-thread; it doesn't cover the start of TDWTF-on-Discurse, but it explains why we're not still using it. Or just search for any thread with "disco" in the title.

Discourse, deader than disco!
-
@_P_ Unfortunately, no.
-
@_P_ Nah, Discourse is great.
-
@pie_flavor
So ... how's that crack smoking working for you?
-
@Luhmann is that some strange euphemism for ass eating?
-
@pie_flavor
if that is your kink, I'm not judging

@_P_ Nah, Discourse is great.
It looks great. And then you register, try to start your first thread and it stops you from replying after a few posts, frustrating both you and the person who tried to help you.
Yeah… No.

@_P_ Oh, definitely. Rocket and Yew are really good.
That reminds me: a while ago I learned who created Vue.js.
You did.

GCC hasn't been specfically an embedded compiler
Nevertheless, it is much used in the world of embedded systems.
Indeed, which is how I first encountered it. Um. GCC 2.5.8, in 1995, long before the EGCS fork.

Yes, they are. But Discourse is a bit older than them. Though at the time the RoR hype was mostly over already and it was already clear it is not the best tool around by far. And Jeff was a C# guy who knew nothing about it too, so…
-
@Zecc It's 2019 and I fell for an Abbott and Costello. Well done.

And then you discover that as you post in a fairly ordinary way, it pops up annoying alerts to lecture you on proper posting style, and that makes you want to stab the creators in the eye with a GAU-8 (if I may mix metaphors a bit).
And you discover how broken the concept of "infinite scrolling" is.

That's as nothing to how broken their implementation of it is!

As long as you're English-speaking. And as long as you have a flagship smartphone (or alternatively, never browse it on mobile). And as long as your community doesn't have any giant topics going on for tens of thousands of posts (which IME rules out all communities with more than 100 users).
-
I'm as shocked as anybody the bot was still up.

He also wrote forum software, despite not being a user of online forums and understanding how their communities work. And was an admin and mod in this community without understanding how our community worked.

Yeah… No.
Unlike NodeBB which lets you post as many times as you want except none of them show up.

That is in fact why it keeps changing the URL (as does NodeBB, for the same purpose) - so even if the context is lost the back button will still bring you to the same infiniscroll position.

I joined a Discourse forum recently to report an abusive post.
The report abuse button is not unlocked for new accounts.
There's also no way to send a private message.
Until a moderator locked the topic and said to contact "
@moderators
" if there was a problem I had no idea who any of the moderators even were.Discourse achieves civilized discussion by making the onboarding experience so awful that you end up with an echo chamber.

@ben_lubar Moderator list (unless they've done something moronic): Menu → About. As for flags, https://blog.discourse.org/2018/06/understanding-discourse-trust-levels/

It's writ, or if you're feeling jovial, writted.
