A hacker tried (and failed) to use rainbow tables against my password store. Now he's all salty about it.

An overclocked PC:
-
Why is there a netscape image in your start bar?Why do you have AIM and Netscape 7.0 installed?
And origin.
-
And gay porn.
However, look at the time in the corner: 7/16/2004
That's why all the old shit is installed.also, it's not his pc.
-
Nah, gay porn is a normal thing to have on a desktop if you're gay - I can accept that.
I am having a hard time accepting netscape.
I know it's a fake, but it's supposed to be win 7 with all this stuff.
It also says 7/16/2014 you blind bat.
-
So it does - I didn't bother clicking the pic to zoom in, and 2004 makes way more sense with all that crap on the desktop.
-
IIRC, that was a desktop shot accidentally posted on a Nissan forum, no?
-
I take absolutely no interest in cars, so I'm going to file this under 'I have no fucking clue'

How the heck did I miss liking this a month and a half ago?

Aero/Vista+ and the associated sidebar apps wasn't out then, which is even more obvious than the tiny date. Same with Origin, for that matter (it's only a couple years old.) 2004 was XP and looks like this:
-
You could've at least clicked that balloon so we can read about the exciting new features!
-
They weren't especially new in 2001
-
My XP looked nothing like that... it actually looked a lot more similar to that win7 screenshot above.
I guess someone never messed around with theming.
Pretty sure there was an XP aero theme floating around, though maybe not back in 2004 yet. See: http://themes4pc.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/aero-z-windows-blind-win-xp-theme.jpg

Perhaps you should have shoved a more inoccuous sentence in between the two.
-
Well I wanted to see it anyway! So I started my VM and decided I have to share the joy with the world.
There. Exciting, isn't it
-
Isn't that what porn is all about - shoving things in between other things (especially if it's gay porn)?
-
I am curiously reminded of a certain website revamp. The bold colours. The misuse of space on the page. Navigation/fluff taking more space than actual content.
-
Well, I am using the advanced technology of
laserwidescreen that no one saw coming in 2001...
-
5:4 should be enough for anyone? Also, I remember buying the DVD of The Matrix, which came in something ridiculous like 2.85:1, so widescreen was alive and well back then.

I have a hypothesis that the movie industry is just trolling us: every time we stretch our windescreen standard they stretch theirs even more!

We haven't gotten to 3:1 yet have we?
No, these days the movie industry is trolling us with ever more remakes.

It's the reverse actually...
I've had a 1920x1200 monitor since like 2006, and in the time since everything has standardized down to the shitty 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution
-
It's the reverse actually...
That's what I meant. Poor wording. Late. Tired. Other excuses.
Or just stupid
-
I dunno, my laptop has 1920x1200.

Don't worry, 4K content is right around the corner...
-
-
So they add quadruple the pixels and quarter the quality of writing to compensate for paying for all those extra pixels.
-
Did I mention, it's an Apple MacBook Pro 17" ?
-
-
Actually, I have to admit, OS X does run better than Windows does on it even with Boot Camp to run Windows on bare metal, runs pretty quietly and keeps my hands warm late at night.
-
I've had a 1920x1200 monitor since like 2006
And actually, I used a CRT with 2048x1536 from 2001 - 2006. I actually downgraded going to the LCD :(
-
Speaking of which, that 22" CRT beast is still on my desk at home, and still works after 13 years. Bit dark in the picture now though.
-
It's not the OS. I know they are fine machines, it's just that every one I used... feels wrong. I can't explain it, and it's highly subjective, but something about the keyboard and the touchpad...
Besides, if I spend that much money on a laptop, you know what I'm getting?
Oh yeah baby, they are back. And having held one the other day (no time to test it though ), it still feels like you can drop it down from the 5th floor, pick it up, and then use it to log in to your netbanking account to pay the fine for breaking the pavement.

Ah, well, if that's the requirement then yeah, not much choice.
-
Yup. But I feel I got a decent machine for my money.
-
Can't build iOS stuff from it, which makes its value somewhat limited to me.
What other advantages does it have?
-
Apart from, as I said, the pretty quiet running, the built in hand warming facilities (metal cases are interesting for cooling properties by way of heat radiation).. and I get to use OS X. I don't like OS X, for the same reason I don't like Windows. They both have their quirks, and things that annoy me but the list of annoyances is different between the two. But OS X is probably marginally ahead of Windows in the list of having slightly fewer annoyances from my perspective.
I get pretty good battery life out of it, and its gaming performance isn't terrible either.

Looks not too dissimilar to my workhorse computer at work...

Looks not too dissimilar to my workhorse computer at work...
Yeah, X220 vs. T530. CBA to look up what the differences in specs are.
-
Note that it might be an old one, from the time when Lenovo just bought IBM's laptop division. I didn't check the actual model, I just image searched for Lenovo X series. The new one I saw didn't look much more different though.
-
Note that it might be an old one
Mine is - had it a few years - still keeps up. Not that I wouldn't say no to a newer version...
-
I'm pretty happy with my T530, except for two things.
- Boss was too cheap to spring for enough RAM, so it really struggles with the number of applications I typically have open at the same time.
- The screen is only (I think) 1280x1024, so when I switch from external monitors to the internal screen, Windows resizes all my windows to fit and stacks them all on top of each other.
- I lied; three things. The trackpad seems clunkier than my old Dell.
-
Nobody expects the Laptop Inquisition, with our two, our TWO things we dislike... our three... amongst our dislikes are such things as....
(bonus points for being a nerdy joke in the nerdy jokes thread)
-
I lied; three things. The trackpad seems clunkier than my old Dell.
I never really used trackpad on those. Not when I have "the red thing" available which I just love. I know it has a proper name, but CBA to find it out now.
-
To each it's own; that's why they put both. I find that significantly more awkward than even the clunkier trackpad.
