Something phishy going on at KBC
-
Last week, KBC bank in B*****m warned its customers that someone had sent out a phishing mail in their name, with an offer that should look too good to be true.
It transpired that the bank did send the message itself, and it was completely legitimate (but old and not actually intended to be sent to the people who received it).

@Gurth Hohoho. I am convinced a crime has occurred here, putting my finger on what is slippery. They have falsely accused themselves? Two false advertisements?

Ah, the progression of time. Offers of the past are too good to be true for today...
Wait...

What apparently happened is that a message about a special offer went to customers and non-customers, in which they were told they could get free KBC car insurance. Because this appeared to be “exceedingly hard to believe” (in the words of the PDF file linked to in the article), KBC “as soon as possible” (ditto) warned its customers about a phishing attempt.
They then did some more investigating, and discovered that it had actually been sent by them. It was an old message that had been intended for people who had taken out a particular loan with KBC, and which was sent out again to more people by accident.

@Gurth Two false advertisements and they slandered a non-existent third party, then. So a false report of a crime, to transform that last into a real crime.
