Most of the time I've no clear idea what I'm doing. And it's not even anything particularly complicated (until, that is, by not having clear idea I artificially make it so). I find my intellectual capacity overtaxed. Perhaps I should not complain. It all arguably works and I get by.
But as @Gribnit said in WTF Bites:
Sadly, programming is actually hard, and eventually punishes mediocrity.
I do believe I might be one of the rare people somewhat honest and aware of their own inability to function properly and so I'm not taking any particular enjoyment in steadily contributing to this world's wtfs per minute (very close to MAXINT as it is).
-
@Applied-Mediocrity I see. I'm somewhat amazed that you're aware of and willing to admit your own mediocrity - few people do. Alas, there aren't many careers that you could switch to while keeping your salary.

I don’t consider myself actually good at anything, and I’ll freely admit that coding isn’t one of my better-developed skills at that. Then again, nobody ever paid me money to write a program for them either :)

They covered just about everything: coding in C++, an STL library reference,

And the C++ support was only up to C++98 (not even C++03).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't STL introduced in C++03?
According to Wikipedia, the STL was initially proposed to the C++ Standards Committee in November 1993, the draft proposal was accepted in March 1994, and final approval in July 1994. So the timeframe fits for C++98 to have the STL.

Visual C++ 6 (1998) had something not entirely unlike the STL.

Only for people using MSVC. Everyone else got it much sooner.
-
@dkf yeah, because there's no better excuse to shit on Microsoft than a question about contents of ISO standards. Also, your answer directly contradicts @Parody's.

I believe this thread is the world's most-viewed Delphi thread in 2018.

Contra: Verity Stob article comments exist.
-
@Gąska That's not a reason to switch. It's a reason to ask for a higher salary.

Huh? Why would an admission of mediocrity be unsavory?
It would follow that the vast majority of a population would be of moderate, or average quality. Or are you referring to the modern economy's re-definition of "mediocre," as in "our customers deserve excellence," and anything that's not rated at or above 4.5 out of 5 stars is a miserable failure?

I didn't say mediocrity is bad. I just said few people admit they're mediocre at what they do for a living.

The vast majority of population aren't programmers. And of those that are, we can expect them to be way above the national average. If a programmer isn't better at programming than an average cashier at IKEA, what are we paying them for? Same for every other profession where skill is important.

NO. Most programmers are mediocre programmers.
-
@Gribnit and that's what's wrong with our industry.
-
@Gąska said in Free Delphi 10.1 Starter:
and that's what's wrong with our industry.
It's not only in our industry
-
@TimeBandit but it's worse in our industry than most others.
-
@Gąska what about the unsinkable Titanic?
If that's not engineering failure, nothing is.I could come up with more examples but
-
@TimeBandit how many Titanics were there compared to ships successfully crossing the Atlantic? How many dildo mounted public IP cameras were there compared to IoT devices with proper security?
-
@Gąska there is a lot of secure software out there.
The main issue, I think, is companies hiring freshly graduated students and pushing them to get it out ASAP
If companies would be liable for the harm caused by their software/devices, things would probably change.
-
@TimeBandit The Titanic probably would have been ok if it had been built with the high-quality steel it was supposed to be built with. There were a lot of documentaries on that a few years back, the cheaper steel got brittle when in freezing water.
-
@Gąska That's because nobody dies when most software fails. Mission critical software shouldn't even be the same field.
-

Does “my job isn’t meaningful” count? Probably, because if you feel that way you’re probably not about to do your best for it.

By the definition of “average” pretty much. ;)

According to my dictionary, same goes for mediocre, almost.

The Titanic would have been OK for sure if it hadn't run into an iceberg.

Of course, blame Canada

Installed the Community version and loaded up an old project from 14 years ago.
Time from double clicking the project file to running the app was about 10 seconds and there were no errors. Not too shabby, Delphi!
-
@coldandtired I'm pretty sure you can take a Delphi 3 project and compile it without much issue
-
This is very nice!
My complaint will be with you shortly.
Edit: There's
some 50121 addresses in that field, and one of them just had to reply and CC all right now.

@Applied-Mediocrity "Yes we sell a software development tool, but alas we haven't yet mastered email. The B in BCC stands for 'bad don't use this' right?"
-
@blakeyrat
That, or there's a new policy not to use BCC anymore, because it may offend blind people.
Of course, being that I identify as a helicopter normally made of various bits of metal alloys, I take issue anyway because it targets only copies made of carbon
-
@Applied-Mediocrity You forget; @blakeyrat has a hardware malfunction that prevents him from understanding the helicopter joke.
-
@pie_flavor
And a fair few others, I gather.
-
@pie_flavor Yeah; it appears to be one of those jokes gamergaters loves because it's all like "LET'S MAKE FUN OF THE EVIL SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIORS AND ALSO PWN THE LIBS GOD I LOVE BEING A MISOGYNISTIC NAZI!"
But I'm afraid I just don't get it. Because I saw a screenshot of Pokemon in like Spanish or German or some language and there was a helicopter in the image and I don't know anything about Pokemon so for all I knew the game normally has helicopters?
But rest-assured, I am the worst person on earth and no doubt dumber than dirt, as I'm sure about 28 people are about to post right down here:

There it is.
Also, are you assuming that only women can be trans? What an absolute bigot.
