And if you're online they'll ask for updates too, which could use up a lot more disk space, but you can say no to those if you're just doing single-player.
There's definitely exceptions to the single-player rule. For example if the old version of the game is incompatible with an OS update.

@dfdub said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:
Edit: Just googled it and I remember why I didn't find it interesting at the time: It sounds too much like Deus Ex, which I don't like much. Feel free to correct me if they're not similar.
When I played Deus Ex after it came out all I can remember is it was the most fucking boring-ass game I'd ever played, so I never finished it.

Seriously, console gaming is absolute crap most of the time. A gaming PC will cost you more out of the gate but will last you two to three console generations and is upgradeable after that instead of having to purchase a brand new one. There are like a couple of exclusives, like Infamous, but there are a shit ton more games you will only get on the PC. PC graphics are far far far better than anything you will get on console too, and you don't have to do wild and woolly hackery to get unlicensed games to work, and you don't pay monthly for online play that the manufacturer doesn't even host. Steam in its infinite strangeness is still far less shitty than console online distribution platforms, and console storage is a pain in the ass to manage, and god help you if you want to do anything crazy like switch between an app and a game. And if you really need that authentic controller experience then remember that Windows comes with Xbox controller support out of the box and there's lots of good third-party ones like the Logitech F310.
Unless you want to play online multiplayer. Where there are almost no cheaters on consoles and plenty on PC -that sucks ass (got me of GTA V online... to much telportation going round)
More Rockstar shit. Competent game developers don't allow teleportation in their netcode.

Only if you don't play online and don't buy games.
Maybe it's an important part. I hate multiplayer games.
But you like single player, so you're still going to pay for them. So you'd roughly break even, depending on how much you'd overpay for gaming PC and how underfunded your non-gaming PC would be.
Also. Mods. Almost every PC game has mods. Almost no console game has them.
-
So, I've used one of those online builder tools, and managed to create a fairly good gaming PC for $900. Videoqualityphiles will probably call it medium-low range, but I'm very confident it would last until at least 2025 and offer decent performance even then - especially considering the recent slowdown in development of faster hardware.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NbMhjy
2 RAM slots left for future extensions. For $150 more you can replace HDD with 1TB SSD, which personally I'd definitely do (although it matters little for gaming). You can probably shave off 10% by looking for parts yourself rather than going with stores recommended on that site.
-
@gąska But I'm behind the highest import taxes on this entire planet and any electronic thing here is usually double the price you have on newegg.
So following your newegg link I found that consoles there are higher priced than here. Dunno wtf is going on, I think they are subsidizing or avoiding taxes assembling stuff here.
Anyway, the ratios seem to be completely different between shitholistan and the sane world.

The first generation of PS3 can play most PS2 games and a bunch of PS1 games.

All generations of PS3 can play a significant amount of PS1 games, as the PS1 emulation is software based. Only the first generation of PS3 can play PS2 games, as those PS3s contained the hardware to play PS2 titles.

@jbert said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:
Depends on what you dislike about Deus Ex. I wanted to start playing the first one but I got quickly bored.
Yup. I cannot quite put my finger on what exactly is wrong with it, but here's a list of my impressions (with Mankind Divided):
- You travel through a semi-open world which is completely lifeless, boring and small. Why have an open world at all if you don't put any effort into it? Just give me a linear game, then!
- The RPG elements are half-assed and just feel a bit out of place. You have an RPG-like inventory and skill system, but despite the choices, you're mostly playing a fixed character and a linear, predefined story. So what's the point of building "my" character?
- The setting has a lot of potential, but the actual storytelling made me yawn all the time.
The only good thing about the game was that it required you to be very stealthy and plan ahead all the time. If only the rest of the game was better, I might have liked it.
Now Dishonored (the original and its DLC) really is a mixture of things, but the sneaking can be turned up to 11. In fact, the trouble is that it can be too easy if you play it like Splinter Cell by picking off all guards one by one
That doesn't sound too good, because that's definitely what I would do.
-
@dfdub said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

Well maybe if you're such a HUGE FAN of this genre you would actually, you know, buy and play the headlining game in that genre for the last few years.
Sorry for my bitterness but it reminds me of a decade ago when people were all bitching and moaning about "there's no adventure games anymore!" while AT LITERALLY THE SAME TIME the excellent adventure games The Longest Journey and Syberia were sitting on shelves unbought. And you're in all these threads and conversations and going, "if you assholes really liked this genre, WHY THE FUCK AIN'T YOU BUYING GAMES IN IT!? MAYBE IF YOU BOUGHT THEM THERE'D BE MORE OF THEM!" and it makes you mad.

You may have noticed that I am currently entertaining that idea, but want more information on the game. You're simultaneously bitching that I won't buy it and ignoring my request for more information which would help me decide whether I should.

Bite my typo-ridden ass. Should have been S or X. Base model doesn’t do UHD (nor does any PlayStation 4).

The first Dishonored game came out like 4 years ago. What information do you need that you can't find? There's like 50,000 COMPLETE PLAYTHROUGHS on YouTube at this point.

Suddenly your posts make much more sense. I knew things could have very different prices in different parts of the world, in absolute terms as well as relative to other local products, but I never thought the ratio between products in seemingly the same category could vary just as much. Could you give some examples of actual prices where you live? How much is PS4 over there, and how much is, say, Core i7-8700K?
-
If online play is important, Sony restricts you to other PS4 players only, and even contaminates your non-Sony account so that it can never be used on any other console or PC. See the Fortnite contoversy.
-
@gąska If we're talking about prices being different in the same category,
In India,
A decent i7 costs about 1000$. PS4 is 580$.
iPhone costs around 1300$ the same one that you can get for 850$ in the US.
12$ perfumes in the US cost 35 - 40$ here.
It's all a huge clusterfuck.
-
@unperverted-vixen said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:
Assuming you don't care about exclusives, how much more would it be to get a PS4 [Slim] instead?
Xbox One S - 380$
Xbox One X - 580$
PS4 Slim - 500$
PS4 Pro - 580$
-
@stillwater said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

-
@unperverted-vixen Xbox 360 120$
-
But wait, assuming I have the Xbox now cos I want to play all the latest and shiny games, the latest forza game standard edition costs around 50 USD. 5 games that I really like would cost me around 250$ about half the price of the entire fucking console. Meanwhile
This entire library for <75$ on sale. Are console games more expensive on average or is my comparison completely fucked up?

Yes.
Sony has regular sales, though, which makes the difference a bit more bearable.

Before, backwards-compatibility with the last generation was the norm, and I strongly suspect that it'll become the norm again.
I'm not so sure. Before, backwards-compatibility was basically made to work by having more-or-less the entirety of the old generation console in the new ones. With the PS3, several models ended up ditching that, and becoming unable to run PS2 games.
And ... nowadays. The PS4 and XBone are both from 2013. A lot of current generation games will be really trying to squeeze out the last drops of performance from the hardware, tailoring themselves very close to the architecture. That will make emulation difficult (AFAIK there are no emulators for current-gen consoles, despite PCs being much more powerful). Next gen HW will probably be quite different, and would MS/Sony invest into emulation (hardware or software) when they can just resell remastered versions?
What architecture? Modern consoles are basically shitty PCs. No more neat stuff like Cell, custom CPUs, custom chips in weird configurations, sometimes even too clever for their own good (eg. Sega Saturn) like in the golden era of console gaming. I think both the PS and the Xbox are AMD parts. Maybe they still have some custom chips doing something minor but IIRC they are quite mundane architecturally.
-
@stillwater said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

It's not a great comparison: AAA vs. not, less than one year old vs. more than two, etc. Older digital sales games tend to drift down in price and/or go on sale often, so you might be able to get it for even cheaper. I don't know how the different countries will affect you, sadly.
A better console-oriented comparison might be to a physical Greatest Hits/Platinum/Classic/Game of the Year/etc. edition of a similar genre game from 2016.
Going back to the main thread topic, I didn't talk about racing/driving games because it's been forever since I was playing them regularly. We used to have a gaming LAN setup with wheels+pedals which we used for things like Interstate '76 and NASCAR Racing 2002. So, yeah.
-
@admiral_p said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

True. I assumed that you would still have the same "advantages" that earlier console generations, i.e., that the exact hardware is well-known up-front and that it's possible to interact with the it more directly. This apparently opens up a few thing that you wouldn't be able to do on a PC -- for example, being able to rely on repeatable timings for certain operations (e.g., transferring data).
(There are a few peculiarities that do stand out: for example, the Xbox has that rather weird 32 MB of SRAM in the GPU that's probably still managed manually to some degree. I wonder what people use it for these days... trying to store a framebuffer in there puts some rather strict upper limits on the FB.)

A PS4 I've seen for US$ 310. It was easier to find in a decent shop between US$ 390 and US$ 520.
An Intel Core i7-8700K is between US$ 440 and US$ 470 - that is just the CPU, not a computer.
edit: I think it was an Xbox one slim that I saw around US$ 310. The PS4 I could find in this price range are all in shady looking ebay-like places.

I don't even really get what your point is here. Other than "I never read up on how successful the Cell architecture was!"
-
@blakeyrat the golden era as in "many different competing consoles", whereas we only have three these days. Why so serious? Accept some hand-wavey platitudes in life once in a while. Cell was at least "original", maybe it was dumb but I like some dumbness in electronics that serve no practical purpose. It's a bloody game console, not a workstation. It's not like games weren't made for the PS2.

Were there ever more than three?
I guess back in the 2600 era, there were... 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision... no still just three really.

you forget the Atari 5200 and Magnavox Odyssey 2, all available ~ 1983
-
@timebandit The Odyssey 2 is a point, but it sold like.. 4.
5200 brings up a good question: can a single company have two game consoles in the same generation? I'd almost say the 5200 and Colecovision were more competitors with each other than with the 2600. (Then you can also swap in the Sega Master System in that generation-- or does it belong with the 7800??? I don't know!!!)

@blakeyrat You can add the Vectrex to make it 5
And what about the Coleco Gemini ?
Wasn't really another console, more like a 2600 clone
