Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?
I have been building this Desktop Search since 1999.
The visual basic code is Open Source and the exe is
downloadable.I have been blogging and yapping about search in various
forums. Only to meet with Great resistance. When I can organize my video, music, pictures and text
there isn't another program that I really need. With
Open Source and this Desktop Search the Operating System
becomes irrelevant. It started as a text search, then picture display was added
when we scanned in 5000+ old family album pictures. When a search match was found and the next line, had the path
to a picture. That picture was displayed. It runs manual and
as a screen saver. After a few seconds the caption on the picture
can be displayed or not. Then came VIDEO. With slow motion, Freeze frame with Preset or
Random start points in the video (mpeg2). Similar options were
added for music files (mp3)Video is by far the most exciting part of Search. I can video
in a book and go directly to a given page and play that back
in slow motion. I can video in forum screens. It has other important features any Search should have.
Ie EXTRACT. I do a context search for a particular "Subject:"
in my outmail file to build a mailing list from old emails. Then
I search that file in matching lines only mode; searching for "To:"
and I have all the email addresses in an output file. A little editing
removing duplicates etc and I have a clean list. I duplicate that
info with a cut and paste. resort it. The plug the required info
for my search in front of line 1 and 2 rather quickly. If the Next line is a URL or strictly text, that data can be put in
the clipboard for pasting into a browser or as a search string or for
storing passwords. It can run background copies of itself and has some primitive
navigation capabilities. That could make for a wonderful video
training tool.It has no database and can easily be explained to the common man.
All they need to know about computing is, how to use this program.
(Very Simple, I'll do more training video.)Thanks
Doug AKA Spectate Swamp

This thread is going pure weird... Don't you think..

RE: Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?
Detailed archiving of your info; be it family albums or music files will be an ongoing task but well worthwhile.
With a few keystrokes you can automatically catalog existing "MPG" video, "MP3" audio, "JPG" pictures and "TXT" email records & notes etc.
Moments later you will be randomly sampling your data treasures. It takes some time for Your personal database to become large enough to make searching interesting. If your memory is short then not so long.
This app plows through text files at 20,000,000 CPS and beyond on a 8 year old LapTop..
I have completed over 4 Dozen Telephone and CableSystem billing conversions (ETL) 95% of that data came
in text files, a small percent was packed integer and real numbers etc. The Export data included toll files, work orders, customer details etc. These data were no problem for this app. Many of these IT jobs were for some of the largest companies in the Western Canada and US.
The so called "Big Data" isn't that BIG for today's computers. I have more personal data than all the ETLs combined!!!To keep You in touch with the massive amounts of DATA you'll collect; the app can randomly sample Video or audio segments as easily as family pictures.
Text data can be displayed "in context" or "matching lines only" along with match counts, line counts and elapsed time.Without a Random option; computer resources go unused and your data mining tools will fall short.
Video playback options such as Fast Forward, Slow Motion and Large font captioning mixed with Video segments are a few of the
main features. There is no more useful app than this.See the thread "nobody shares knowledge better than this" for all the details

Back to gathering knowledge... With Video.
I just purchased an adapter from the camcorder to a telescope...
There are game trails in the hills around here and talk of Sasquatch.
I'll be able to hunt critters from my rocking chair..For night time video I purchased a 8" disco ball.
A friend has a very intense spot light.
Combine that ball with a security mirror and you have a portable yard light.. Better than any night vision. When I look at the disco ball box I want to bust a move or two..

To share Knowledge or food... SuperSize for best results.
Yup I'll make garage sized 3D copies of all 3 stones. Better than any roadside attraction. They will have to fit on a tractor trailer truck. Maybe even make small pendants of the 12 Megaliths. Changing size of your knowledge makes sharing just that much easier. -
RE: Nobody shares knowledge better than this
Nobody shares the Panama Papers better
CMS and the Panama Papers
People want to see this stuff bad.
They don't want some watered-down pre-screened dribble from Govt or Journalists.
Give Us the data. On the Cloud in searchable sortable data sets. It's that simple!
All we want is the data. Give it to us Now!...Here is how I'd like to see the Panama Papers on the cloud.
FIRST! How to distribute the "EMAILS" for quick easy access by the populace.
Lets start with a large text file containing important email info that can be quickly searched, SORTed, extracted, searched and examined etc...
A subset containing:
Date time of each email
Sender Id
Subject: info
First and Last (50 characters) of the email message. (salutation and closing details)
For a total of 200 to 300 characters per record - easily SORTable and small.Multiply that by 11,000,000 (the number of e-mails) for file size.
Have the option of downloading the file or View it on the host Cloud Site...
Being able to search this Email data in 1 or more files would be a great start for anyone interested in the Panama Files.
SECOND! Pictures and Images. Let people randomly peruse these images.. Because People are nosey..
Give users the option of creating a wiki like document for each image file and what emails they may be associated with.
come on we want names and details. People out there know far more than what's in the existing data horde.
Along the way we'll be creating a massive wiki like record base of links, videos, pictures for a more thorough Panama Papers investigation.NOTE: There are files and video formats that this App does not deal with. BUT those specific file types
can be randomly selected and passed through the CLIPBOARD to another App that can handle, play / display them.Investigators can search this huge library of info, only downloading those relatively few specific records for viewing or storing?
Why aren't we seeing something similar? This Cloud System could be Up in a few days. What's up? Is there data hoarding, redacting going on?

@wharrgarbl
The Stones have been in a Safety Deposit box on and off for the last 30 years.
Not no more..
The Bank where I was keeping them is moving and I had to go pick up the Medicine Stones. I hadn't laid eyes on 'em in probably 15 or more years..
I think the stones got tired of waiting and Broke out..
Now we will see them up close and on video. -

RE: Nobody shares knowledge better than this
Nobody shares MUSIC better than this
I recently have been collecting music, resulting in over 24,000 mp3 songs.
What a great database to test, sample and play..The app uses a prompted entry like this:
" female / greatest / jazz / blues / best / Celtic "
to randomly play matches on any of up to 6 keysNotepad was used to put the word " female " on the links to the favorite female artists
For Sharing Tunes:
Nothing shares better, when You have control like this.A friend had a specific Genre that he wanted. there were 36 matches.
This is one thing that SSDS does well ... Extract - coping these files to another folder.. In a few seconds those requested tunes are moved to His USB stick. For the most part I have been ambivalent about music but not no more!!
I'd like to have 10 times as many songs. Then I could really show off...
The problem with having all the formats in one or 2 folders is another use of the Extract
move copies of all .mp3 files to a separate folder
move copies of all .jpg files to a separate folder
move copies of all .wma files to a separate folder (maybe convert wma to mp3)
.
.
move the other file types till you have done most of them..Then DELETE the original folder that contained all the files.
I also build a link files, so random wma song links can be passed along to another player through the clipboard...

RE: Nobody shares knowledge better than this
Then fast backwards. Many things are much easier to see if done this way.
60 seconds through 82 seconds shows the cloaked object. Fast forward and fast backward a number times for the best viewing.
Or maybe it is just a cluster of butterflies?

RE: Nobody shares knowledge better than this
Really looking forward to it. Don't listen to @HardwareGeek. Everything about what you do is intriguing. Are you still looking for round rocks, by the way? It's been many years since you've posted an update on that front.
Lots of cool rocks here abouts. Osoyoos Megaliths a dozen or more.
Echos that carry and carry.
Special stones coming out of the woodwork.[dammit, line breaks! - bz]

Well, no, actually it usually holds no more than your physical RAM space in RAM. Because well, uh. That's how computers work.
To be a whole lot more than 40 lines of info.... could be as low as 100 even less...
How computers work... My first Cobol program was in 1970 no more than 6 or 8 K program space...
Searching Massive data files any other way than this would be painfully slow..does the disk light still blink?

RE: Nobody shares knowledge better than this
Nobody shares computer knowledge better than this
Years ago a friend and mentor (Grant Cook) said that on the next system he developed all the data files would be TEXT only. Forget the integer, real and other numeric formats.
I'm a firm believer in that. When you need to do a data fix, how easy it is to use a simple text edit program like notepad.
I really love line numbers those that are against, don't have any idea how simple they make things. A magical noodle here and there and serendipitous events sometimes happen.
If they take away "goto's" I'm be sunk. Few of the purist programmers would have hired me for my coding methods. I wouldn't hire any of them either.

I've found many people with huge audio collections complaining about the 32GB size of most smart phones when they have hundreds of GB on their computer...
The SSDS solution is to COPY thousands of RANDOM songs to a USB stick and put those files on their phone. Do this every week or two so that the selection is always fresh.Share and Share randomly..

The beach was 10 or 12 feet above the water level
I had a rock 3 1/2 inched almost square and 1/2 inch thick.. maybe slate
I threw the rock down at the water HARD and lots of Spin.
It landed about 20 yards out and ....
4 or 5 long skips and 60 yards later ... It caught the seals that were laying on a log boom by surprise ...
before they could dive, it struck one in the side... just barely making it there so no damage was done
After that they always went in the water when they seen me... It was a lucky lucky shot. -

The day before yesterday our local bank was closed for 2 days for a cleaning...
Someone there tested positive... We thinkSo yesterday I took a Elderberry extract bottle and placed it in the lobby up against the inside glass.
Later I was going by after shopping and saw a lady inside the bank.
I entered the lobby and pointed at the elderberry then at me and back at her.
letting her know that I was the guy.
She said "Thank you ever so much"
to which I replied
"it's the best ... the very best"
then I leftWhat does the WHO the CDC big Medicine or big Pharma say?
I'd have evacuated all extended care and hospitals right at the start...
I was telling people if my Dad or Mom was in the local OFH I'd break them out.
Most people died because of piss poor health leaders.
I'm calling them all out.Tomorrow a group is going to search for a beautiful rock pile...
I'll get video and post it... I love rocks...Another brag
My friend Henry Nelson and me were having a rock skipping contest...
We were throwing stones to a calm spot under a bridge over the eagle river
It was a contest between the two best skippers ever... I think I won
Henry said I had a good arm...I didn't think much about that until a couple years later..
Henry said that when he was in Germany he won the light heavy weight championship in arm wrestling
Saying I had a good arm meant way more coming from a guy that was the BESTI have more brags but too much is too much
