There are elevators here that still have a person operating it. They just ask what level you're going and press a button. (just a few ones, in a handful of old buildings)

This rat apparently hates peanut butter. We've tried three different brands including Nutella.
Rats here were attracted to my dog's food. Poison had reduced the rat incidence, but what solved the problem for good was storing the dogfood better, in a thicker plastic box.

Appointments at banks, is this a thing?
Not at WTFBank, or any private bank I know here in Brazil. In some branches of our public regional bank there are instances were you make an appointment, and still have to wait 2h after you get there, because public brazillian banks.
Is it a regional thing, maybe? Like this guy's from New York where it's normal?
If it is a thing, when did it start?
Am I the only one who didn't know you were "supposed" to make an appointment before walking into a bank? No, you're not alone on this
Or was this guy just being a jerk because his boss understaffed and he had to miss lunch?
One way to figure it out would be someone calling the bank pretending to do whatever you were doing and asking if they need to make an appointment

RE: WTF Bites
Today I saw a device that, in certain circunstances need to be connected to a PC this way:
- a microusb cable connects the device to a box (dunno what this box does)
- the box is connected to a cable that has a RJ45 plug in one end and a RS-232 plug in the other end
- the RS-232 end is conected to a PC using a serial-usb adapter, because the computer didn't have a RS-232 port

@lorne-kates said in Google wants to make e-mail more "interactive" - what could possibley go wrong?:
If by "immediately" you mean "immediately after showing a spinner for 5-10 seconds while the site loads non-immediately".
Our intranet here takes over 1 minute for each click, it's been like that for a few months already. When I complained they said it's working as expected.

Some of the posts in this thread that are attributed to Guest could be attributed back to their original posters by looking at posts quoting them.
Reading old posts like that I found the realname of a few users here like that. You have a post with their current name, followed by a quote with their old one. Some of these joined the forum using their real names and changed after the fact.
@ben_lubar could do a mass search & replace if that's a problem

Yes, I know critical updates have been installed to my computer.
Yes, I'm aware that I have to restart my computer for these to be effective.
No, I do not want to restart now. I will restart later. This is the same thing I told you the last 2 times.

but we'll manufacture it from algae or something instead of refining it from petroleum.
you know..... there's an interesting idea..... because presumably the algae would require carbon dioxide to create the complex hyrocarbons.... if we could manage to make such an operation have significant efficiency, say 20% or less energy losses in the creation process, and be cheap enough we could replace oil drilling with this sort of technology and stabilize CO2 levels.... because we keep recycling our carbon instead of digging it up.
it's an interesting enough idea that i'd be interested to help fund some research in that direction....
we already make ethanol from sugar cane

I thought "open sores" was a term invented by @blakeyrat, but I found in a reddit comment that it was said by Robert Metcalfe:
The Open Source Movement's ideology is utopian balderdash [... that] reminds me of communism. [...] Linux [is like] organic software grown in utopia by spiritualists [...] When they bring organic fruit to market, you pay extra for small apples with open sores – the Open Sores Movement. When [Windows 2000] gets here, goodbye Linux.

RE: THE slightly ALTERNATIVE UNIVERSE THREAD
The new world isn't discovered until 2100. Hitler conquered all Europe. The world is divided in two states, the unified Europe and the soviet union. A deal is made and they coexist peacefully. The soviet economy survive longer because they have all that middle east oil. Unicode is never invented.
