That’s how modern web development works.
You mean it's a competition where the most insane solution wins, until it's replaced by an even more insane one?
Stop saying that, not everyone is supposed to know!

Do you know how many people that stuff has killed???
Everyone who has ever consumed it has died. 100% correlation.

@izzion In this particular case I'm more inclined to blame HP than MS. I would expect MS to at least have the honesty to continue showing the "shutting down" animation while doing that upload.

WTF Bite: Why TF does it take almost 50 seconds for my PC to power off? WTF is it doing during all this time?
This is the time from clicking "shut down" to the moment the power LED and fans turn off. The screen turns off after about 10 seconds already.
The telemetry has to finish uploading
You joke but that’s probably the truth.
(I’m not going to get into “writing the hibernate/page file shenanigans” because soft power off)

Yes. Germans are supposed to do their job thoroughly ; TSA agents are known for letting actual dangerous stuff slip thru.
No one said anything about competence being involved as a hiring characteristic for the TSA, merely the sense of humour bypass. Any competence is accidental.

That... doesn't make it any better.
No, but it was kinda knowingly experimental and actually back then it wasn’t the sluggish bloated monstrosity it came to be.
I remember seeing stuff done in it in 2013 or so where it was in active production use and you kinda didn’t know that’s what it was because it didn’t eat all your RAM like a fat kid on cake.
I think Game Dev Tycoon still uses that old a build actually.

@DogsB the real question that the headline doesn't get at: we might be facing Taylor Swift fatigue but is that better or worse than Apple Swift fatigue?
You really do have a knack for giving us the willies.
Good to know that all this time I spent learning to cope with PHP has proven useful in one way then!

@Tsaukpaetra would “copy deployment artifacts from sever one over to server two. Leave config alone. Restart” suffice?
I gave instructions like that once and ended up with broken config on server one.
Unfortunately not, this isn't an automated deployment. I'm hand configuring a Windows RDS gateway server.
You poor sod.

RE: Is it a duck or a rabbit?
@hungrier I don't think it's based entirely on recognition and pattern matching to a Coke can; it is reliant on the contrast between the pale colour and the cyan to encourage the eye to see red.
The rest of the image has too much noise (and not enough white to do anything with), and if I relax my vision ever so slightly I can see it for the not-red it actually is.

RE: WTF Bites
This week I learned (through the new pgAdmin) that someone liked the idea of Electron so much they made another.
(that said, switching to an Electron-like system is still a huge improvement for the "desktop" version of pgAdmin, which badly needed it)
nw.js predates Electron, though it was originally called node-webkit.

RE: Is it a duck or a rabbit?
@Tsaukpaetra the difference is the “dithering” in the first picture appears to produce something that looks red despite there being no red in the picture.
The other…

@Arantor Indeed. The point I aiming for is that the "real developers" part is more relevant than the "serious languages" part.
PHP developers aren’t real developers. We’re play-acting at it, and we know we are. But unlike the JS kiddies, we act well enough to actually ship things.

@Gurth I for example have my own waste pipes inside the walls but my upstairs neighbours have their waste pipe running down the wall outside.
Then again, when this house was built in 1851 things were a little different, as was the layout of this property in terms of how the three were connected.
Modern buildings have no fucking excuse, but then all modern buildings look like soulless rabbit hutches I'd never want to live in anyway.

RE: The Official Status Thread
@Parody I want a CMS that makes it marginally less painful than writing things by hand. MediaWiki does that but the minute you want to go beyond that it's a clusterfuck.
I love how, for example, to properly replicate the sidebar that Wikipedia has, you need to not only enable several bundled extensions but you're writing Lua scripts to do it which get run in a PHP interpreter...

Awaiting the picture of @Arantor's car in the Lounge.
I live in the middle of a city with no parking spaces, I instead invested it in property. I’m in the centre of town, 5 mins walk from the train station, under 10 from the heart of the shopping area and I have garden space both front and back.
Don’t need a car in my town.

I find "Text files in a folder" to be a pretty good substitute.
For me personally, sure, but the project isn’t just me and other people like the pretty formatting and the hypertext part of it because it actually is connected pages in honest to goodness HT fashion.

@boomzilla It's funny, but it's not particularly correct.
Mainly because universities have been the backbone for fundamental research since the beginning, and were initially granted more freedom than the rest of the society as most rulers did recognize value in having some smart people that were, in private, allowed to criticise them.

RE: Programming Memes Thread
And this is why the "PHP devs all drive Lambos" meme exists because while our language is shit, we're out just actually shipping shit and bringing in the moneyz rather than any of this shit.
