Status: Just found out what happens if you die at the same time you collect a power up from the 20c ? box while jumping: Death music plays, Mario gets bigger (or presumably whatever other powerup), and Super Mario's lifeless body bounces up and back down without any input
-
Wait, we can create new threads... just like that?
-
@topspin I had to work long and hard days in the salt mines to be able to afford this thread
-
I think this sums up the experience pretty nicely so far: poop over everybody by spamming them with an endless stream of hot garbage

Mario 35 Status as per the in-game stats:
Level: 36
Total gaming time: 2:30h
Wins: 2
Average rank (last 10 games): 6 (out of 1, 7, 15, 5, 11, 1, 3, 3, 7, 2)
Record number of coins: 980Which still leaves me just barely scraping at the top of "A" ranking. I guess you need about 1000+ coins to get that sweet "S" rank
Oh yeah, global rank: 87829
By now the first 36 are all on 1st place with some hack garbage of 99999 coins. Which is impossible, because even if I cheat and play perfect, I can only play until everybody else dies, not 10 hours non-stop like you'd need to for that amount of coins.
-
@topspin I have:
Level: 43
Time played: 2:53
First-place wins: 3
Recent average: 7 (16, 9, 6, 1, 4, 14, 1, 13, 1, 7)
Coin ranking in regular battle: 120133, with 691 coins, grade A
Coin ranking in special battle: 27436, 804 coins, grade S
-
Just netted my first win, with 3 KOs to boot.
Level: 29
Total Time Played: 1:07:38 (was under 1 hour before the winning session)
First-Place Wins: 1
All-Time KOs: 5
Average Rank: 10 (23, 9, 8, 9, 6, 6, 21, 4, 10, 1)
Most Coins Collected: 1352The low rank losses were particularly bad runs, lot of spam and running out of coin for the item boxes.
-
@ChaosTheEternal And on a warm-up round, I grabbed my second win and finished all 3 daily challenges.
-
I had my first* time-out loss today. It was down to me and someone else, and they barely sent any enemies so I couldn't keep up with the sped up timer.
-
@hungrier I always try to front-load my timer, in case I get to the last 5 and it speeds up (or especially if I'm going for a win and the timer goes red).
If I'm not getting a bunch of enemies, I aim to pick up duplicate power-ups; If I am getting enemies, I spend a bit of time trying to chain bounces off them or ramming a shell through them.
Star is OK if you get a huge swarm. Fire flower kills are the worst for maintaining time.
-
@ChaosTheEternal I had it built up earlier in the round, but I also went into coin rooms and lost time there that I couldn't get back
-
I got a posthumous KO:
-
@hungrier AFAIK, the red "KO" is who got you. I saw one on #1 when I got #2 once.
-
@ChaosTheEternal OIC. That makes more sense, although I do like the idea of the last enemy (I forget) that I shot before dying getting someone else right after.
-
@hungrier @ChaosTheEternal Here's one where that actually happened:
-
-
Some crappy level spam earlier today: 1-1, 1-3, 1-1, 1-3, 1-1, 1-3.
Anyway, I noticed that the coin rankings don't seem to have any more 99999 people, so I guess they fixed that exploit
-

I think that's because people just leave their selection on 1-1 when they start. Most of the time, I see it going between 1-1 and 1-2.
Right now, I'm playing more to have cleared every level instead of winning, though winning isn't bad.
EDIT: As I say that, I get a run that started on 1-2, had half the lobby KO'd by the time I cleared it, and I finished well before getting close to the level I selected (6-4).
-
@ChaosTheEternal I'm used to 1-1 and 1-2 spam, but at least 1-2 has a warp. Going between 1-1 and 1-3, there's no getting out.
I'm also still trying to unlock the levels I haven't got yet. I'm missing -3 and -4 in 5, 6 an 7, and all of world 8.
I've also found that either I got worse at Tetris 99 over the past almost year, or everyone else who's still playing it is crazy good.
-

I'm only missing 7-4 and world 8. Just cleared 6-4 and 7-3 today, and figured I should stop before I get any more frustrated. 5 runs, 1 win, 2 complete BS losses.
-
@ChaosTheEternal And I've now cleared every level, with my clear of 8-4 also being a winning run. Spamming the guy who came in 2nd with hammer bros and hammer Bowsers probably helped, though nothing compares to the time I lost with 15 Lakitus on my screen:
Had a pretty amazing run before that where I cleared 7-4, as well as 8-3 and 8-1, in that order.
Out of my last 10 rounds, my lowest rank was 7th.
-
I managed to get in the same room as someone I was watching on Twitch, who died early on 1-3 and restarted :womp_wah:
-
6-3 Status: It came up when I was in the top 2, and the other guy died before I could clear it
-
@hungrier 6-3 Status: The same thing happened again, except I didn't even do one jump in 6-3 before the last guy died. 6-3 still not cleared; still need 7-4 and all of 8-.
-
Can anyone beat how badly I screwed up just now?
-
@hungrier
I mean, just straight swan diving off the nearest ledge is hardly a competition
-
@izzion ITYM running straight into the first enemy
-
6-3 Status: I finally cleared 6-3 on this weekend's special battle. Now I can start picking other stages that will probably never come up in the regular mode
-
Status: After being robbed of clearing 8-2 by winning the match, I have now finally cleared 8-2 (and subsequently won the match)
-
Hadn’t played since the first week, after the free trial week of the Switch online account ran out. (I don’t need it for anything else.) So I’m pretty far behind, got 5-1 and 6-2 unlocked but not even 4-*. Probably by now everyone’s advanced to unbeatable pro gamer mode?
Just played a few matches again. This one drags on forever, I’m at over 500 coins and 399 time that’s already ticking in the red, but there’s still 8 players. Why is nobody dying? Felt almost invincible with the coin count and time, but of course I missed the retarded 2-4 elevator jump again and came in 5th.
-
@topspin I participate in some Twitch streams where we try to sync up and join the same game, and that's where it gets real competitive at the top. Other than that, games with randos are still usually (comparatively) easy to win, aside from rndomly slipping off an elevator or slamming headfirst into Greg
-
Oh Em Gee, the frickin air physics. I only die by dropping into some pit. And the mid-air stalling when you get hit or get a power-up...

A moment of silence for Greg, the most hated hazard of all.
-
Status: damn it, Greg!
-
6-3 Status: came up first level in the current special battle, which made it pretty easy to clear. Also hilarious to see everybody dropping dead like flies. Was down to about 10 players left before even getting to 6-4. And spamming hammer bowsers into the world is pretty awesome.
Also, in a normal game I ran through 8-3 without dying, but timed out after that because nobody was attacking me.
Got worlds 1 to 6 unlocked now plus 8-3.
-

Everyone just expected Greg to take you out
-
Status: I can usually win games against online randos, barring unfortunate Greg incidents or timer running out at the end with no attackers. However, it seems like there's no way to get on the leaderboards with that, because randos don't tend to collect nearly enough coins to build up the pot.
This morning I won a game while taking a
shbreak from work, and ended up with 3000-some coins, which is an OK amount (it's in S rank, so that's something) but nowhere near the top 100 leaderboard scores. Last night I did a few stream sniping games, and the winners of those were all in the 6xxx and 7xxx coin range, because each game had 5-10 people from the stream, all collecting mad coins and going as long as possible. As of this post, MaxArcader is #6 with 7210 coins, which was from last night's stream. There are a few others in the top 100 who are in the same stream sniping group as well. Then there are also a lot of Japanese names who probably have a similar thing going
-
A few players left, got a bazillion of coins and about 300 on the clock, but time already ticking in the red. Everybody attacking me, hit a water level without a fire flower. Damn it, I'll run out of time quickly if I don't kill any enemies...
So many enemies, I'd like a star or fire flower, but even a pow would kill quite a bit. Spamming that item roulette, I get literally 5 mushrooms in a row. Well, I guess that at least were some expensive seconds for the clock, right?Anyways, made it through and hitting 8-3 with a star, finally, to bring it home.
Not on the level of @hungrier and his pro-gamer streaming friends, but GG.
At rank 3477, at least the rank # is lower than the coin count.
-
Oh, and the current special challenge is fun. Start with star power but only 20 seconds on the clock. If you start in like 3-2, that's not a problem, you get back to reasonable time immediately and then can go on wasting some time collecting items and coins. But boy, if you start in 6-2 you're in for a challenge to make it out of there alive before the timer runs out.
I think after that one it's right to 1-1 where you can chill, but at at that point it'll be only about 5 players left.
-
I need to try this game before they pull it in March.
Hard to do with a shiny new PS5 in my living room.
-
This game has replaced Hearthstone for me.
Unrelated: the Switch now lives in my bathroom

I just had a round with quite a nasty set of levels. It was something like 1-1, 1-4, 1-3, 1-4, 2-2, 2-1 (a bit of respite), 2-2, 3-4, 2-2, 6-4, 2-3, then the last guy ran out of time. I don't think I've ever seen this many fish and castle levels in one regular game

I always choose a water or Bowser level.
It amazes me, that, as bad as I am, I'm apparently better than 75% of Mario players.
I just kind of take my time in levels. (And I get the clock back running through groups with star power, or stomping goombas in a combo.)

I'm sort of disgusted with myself that I know what each of those numbers means, and what level they correspond to.
-
@error If I'm trying to be mean I'll pick 6-3, but I'm high enough level in the game that by the time it comes up in the rotation nobody's left to fall off of it.
Most of the time I go for 3-2, since it'll usually be on red time when it comes up and if there are still people targeting me I can build the timer back up.

The next Mario degeneracy milestone is being able to identify what levels are coming up by glancing at the thumbnails of the other players

Not Directly Related To Mario 35 Status: For some reason, all morning I've had the "star song" from Mario Land 2 stuck in my head.

It's kinda funny that BDSM is more tolerated by the modern society than being an avid gamer.

People would rather have sex than play video games alone?

@error But can you have sex with 34 other people at the same time? Checkmate lifestyleists
