Government idiots, who don't understand technology, attempt to regulate the internet

Some choice quotes
authentication used by banks could also by employed by internet firms to crack down on bullying and grooming
Absolutely, we need more of that "authentication used by banks", it'll fix everything!
companies such as WhatsApp to contribute to society over the negative costs of their technology, such as end-to-end encryption
Yeah, end to end encryption is the real problem. Fuck encryption, what did it ever do for us? Oh yeah, it allowed us to do secure banking! You seem to be contradicting yourself.
she [Theresa May] will urge social media firms to treat violent misogyny with the same urgency as they do terror threats
Sounds like a great idea... Let's see how that would play out...
: So, Sergeant Best, why did we fail to prevent the bomb from being set off down town?
: Well sir, we were too busy dealing with Mrs Fallon's complaint about someone calling her a "frumpy bitch".
: Damn, I guess that's equal priority, and I suppose it's "first come, first served". So how's Mrs Fallon's case going?
: We're still following up leads, but we cannot identify the perp until we get more of that "authentication used by banks".
: Yeah, we really need some of that sweet, sweet, authentication. That'll solve everything.

authentication used by banks
Because banks have such an unblemished record of great online security.

crack down on ... grooming
Start by restricting the ridiculous assortment of hair care products at the supermarket.

He said: “There should be an element of the ‘polluter pays’. You contribute to the cost your technology is engendering.”
Absolutely. We're still talking about Equifax, right?
Online violence against women and girls should not be separated from offline violence
Hard to separate from something that never existed. I'll call it online violence when ITAPPMONROBOT hits someone in the face.

Theresa May
She of the anti-Midas effect. Everything she touches turns to dross, usually because of her stupidity, cowardice, secretiveness or general mean-spiritedness. Even her immediate predecessor managed to somehow be less of a complete waste of oxygen…

@dkf it's so nice to share a forum with like-minded people.

@doctorjones whenever appalling politicians hold positions of power, the cause usually lies in the opposition being much worse. (Although frankly I don't get why, of all people, it had to be Theresa May. Better for Labour, I guess). Anyway, in this case, Corbyn's fine really, much better than any of the Labour leaders of the last at least ten years, but the problem here lies in the laughable handling of his party of his rise. They'd cut off their nose to spite their face, as long as somebody embodying the values that Labour should represent (starting from its name) eventually fails because God forbid, somebody who is actually on the left of the political spectrum (and he's no Trostkyite either, really) taking the reins of a supposedly left-of-centre party.

Guessing he's talking about smart cards. A number of countries do already use those to prove online identity to government Web sites (though they get end-to-end encryption as a byproduct, o noooes-- I guess it'd be possible to use a TLS null cipher if browsers are fucked up enough to support that with default configuration, not even sure if they are).

@heterodox
For important stuff, not for social media.

Nothing of that sort, you just read it wrong. He said "cryptography is great when controlled by the government".

I see no problem there. I mean, almost all cryptography is based on prime numbers, they just need to pick a random one and encrypt everything using that and never tell anyone what they picked!
Of course, it will turn out to be 7, because it was easy to remember.

the last bit
simple, it's either 1 or 0. that is how it always ends.
-
@luhmann Since it's a prime number, we'll be in real trouble if the last bit is a 0.

@onyx said in Government idiots, who don't understand technology, attempt to regulate the internet:
all cryptography is based on prime numbers
I've often wondered why it had to be prime numbers. Wouldn't a number with multiple facts work too?

@tsaukpaetra factoring is harder if both factors are large primes. Explanation for RSA: https://crypto.stackexchange.com/a/35464

In this case it rather was a case of a destructive votum (as in: Tear something down without a concrete plan on how to proceed afterwards).
This created essentially a void of power because of the: "I can't believe we won. Anyone have an idea on how to proceed?"-effect which left it more or less to random chance who got to fill the void.
Such a result is usually the case with destructive schemes - they don't have a plan for what comes afterwards and thus you get "Fuck if I know."
