I know the one 'l' version is acceptable in some places, but still, why not use the universally accepted spelling?

Because it's on the decline?
-
According to a quick google search, most dictionaries list both forms.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Pfff, Americans. What have the
RomansAmericans ever done for us?

Let's just compromise and use 3 Ls.

Because they want to show that they're Americuns?

Because they didn't want to add an extra byte of overhead to save on mobile data plan ( even though you will be streaming some video)?

Because they didn't want any confusion with the

You know how C makes it too easy to shoot yourself in the foot and should be avoided? English makes it too easy to make spelling mistakes and should be simplified.

If you like streaming video over a mobile phone connection, every byte you can shave off somewhere else counts.

If English had undefined semantics like C has undefined behaviour, communicating would be so much more fun
Source: "You look lovely <UNDEFINED SEMANTICS> today"
English -O0: "You look lovely today"
English -O1: "You look so hot"
English -O2: "Nice tits"

I just noticed
twothree more things about this dialog: one, why is there only one choice for Norwegian, given that there are two common spelling standards for it? And two, why does it prompt you for your preferred language at all? In other words, why doesn’t it simply choose the operating system’s current language, and perhaps asking the user only when none of the user’s system-wide choices are available in the app? Oh wait, I forgot — this runs under Windows, with its outdated one-language-per-install nonsense. Three, why are all the language names in English with country flags next to them?

Your dialog seems to be mislabel(l)ed: American English is the more traditional spelling.
What he didn't tell you is that when you pick English (Traditional), it selects late Middle English, as featured in the 13th Century manuscripts of Havelock the Dane and King Horn. It's an interesting language, as it is somewhat like the Discworld's "Old" ("before they invented spelling", see Mort), and it mostly lacks those pesky French-derived words that make up half of modern English. It also avoids the debate about whether to use "he" or "they" as the "I don't know whether I'm talking about a man or a woman" pronoun by the simple expedient of usually spelling the third-person-plural pronoun "he", just like the singular-masculine one.
But of course, the flag is then wrong...

You could argue that the flag is wrong anyway. At least, if you're a Welsh speaker

Identifying languages and national flags is troublesome anyway.

C does not make it too easy, it gives you enough rope for it.
What remains to be seen is why you'd need rope to shoot yourself in the foot.

English
"Rope" is rather short in English, so I don't see how that's similar.

No, it isn't.
It is the more common spelling, which rather just like Chinese ("Traditional" is used in small Taiwan, "Simplified" is used on mainland).
@Gurth said in Cancelable:

... apparently because they didn't translate it to both. After all, they didn't translate it to Swahili either. Or Kannada. Or Georgian. Or ...
@Gurth said in Cancelable:
why doesn’t it simply choose the operating system’s current language
Because the operating system's current language is Gujarati?
Actually, it's quite likely it's shown even if it does know the current system language. If it preselects it, I would not mind.
@Gurth said in Cancelable:
Three, why are all the language names in English with country flags next to them?
Because some graphic designers think everything must come with an icon and that's the best icon anybody came up with for languages. It breaks down when you get translated to Gujarati, Kannada, Urdu, Telugu and such, but since most applications don't have any of those translations, nor others with similar problem, it mostly seems to work.

Selecting the flag for languages that are spoken in multiple countries is not big problem. French obviously gets , Dutch also obviously gets , Portuguese usually gets , though it should actually get if you don't differentiate.
The bigger problem is that there are 12 major (though that counts the one that should probably get ) and many minor languages that should get . There is also one major language that is spoken in quite a few countries and if you chose one of the flags (I think it would be ), you'll seriously piss the speakers in the other countries using that language. In the end I think we used :flag_las:).

Yes. That is why around here & is common.

Tsk. You mean "If you're Welsh". I'm English, but I can speak Welsh (it's a bit rusty, but I can do it), and I think the flag is just fine, if you want to indicate the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. And no, I'm not from the part of England next to Wales.

I think it wouldn't matter which of the flags you used - there's a lot of mutual dislike among them, especially between and .

TIL about ngram viewer. Just found that the word "needful" was more popular in the late 17th century.

Exactly. The flag is, normally, selected by population and by that rule it would be . But they would not like it (and it would not be that obvious for many people either), so in previous job we used a "generic" "flag", green with crescent moon.

Or from, say, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Burundi, Finland, Brazil, Canada, Guatemala, or any one of a number of second-rate countries not worthy of having their flags displayed next to the names of languages that are widely used there anyway.
