What happened to Discourse?
-
I haven't been back to the forums since the early days of the Discourse switchover. What ended up influencing the switch to another bit of forum software?
-
@lyptt Discourse is a steaming festering pile of shit that broke every time someone did something unexpected like post? ;)
-
Haha yeah I noticed that, but there seemed to be a general attitude of "we're using Discourse now, like it or leave", so it's quite surprising to see that's no longer the case.
-
@lyptt The Discourse devs changed the situation to "leave it or leave it"
-
It also had a lot to do with the fact that TDWTFers got mass banned from meta.d.
-
That avatar, combined with the title...
This is the funniest thing I saw the whole day! Durrrr, what happen to Discourse?
Note: this is, of course, not comment about @lyptt himself, just the interaction of his avatar and the title.
-
@Onyx This was unintentional, but I'm pleased nontheless ;)
-
Top kek
-
@lyptt jeff offered to pay alex money to move tdwtf off discourse.
-
@Buddy because after 6 months we loved it too much for him, just like he said we would!
-
@lyptt said:

We didn't like it, so we left.
We particularly didn't like just how nasty it was at the network communication level, and we particularly didn't like the developers of it. We're now going through a period of beating nodebb up, which seems to be a better platform but not as sophisticated a UI; Jeff's mad bikeshedding occasionally (despite himself) achieved something reasonable so we're stealing the best ideas.
Fortunately, we don't need to steal many ideas…
-
@dkf The atmosphere certainly seems better in here than when Discourse was around, so I'm glad it happened eventually!
-
@dkf NodeBB also seems to kill my phone's battery though, it looks like it keeps doing stuff in the background.
-

For the most part, and that's almost entirely down to the fact that NodeBB doesn't shit its pants every 6 hours and sod off for 20 minutes

It's the UI; like Discourse, it's quite JS-heavy
-

Yes. As @RaceProUK said, it's all the JavaScript. It's still less than Discourse though. And, with the API actually, you know, existing, and being sane, maybe that whole "I could write a native app" thing might be a reasonable idea now...
-
@Onyx Actually it might be all the small network roundtrips which cause my Mobile Network transciever to remain in full-power mode.
Even in the composer it's seems to be sending drafts or something.
I wonder I can collect statistics...
-
@JBert said:
small network roundtrips
That would be my first guess too. That's the single highest-power thing you can do in a mobile device.
-
@JBert Makes sense. I guess that could be solved by setting a polling period (like, 5 minutes) rather than having a websocket connection constantly open. Don't know if you can do that from browser though...
I am making a note about that if I ever decide to tackle the client idea though ;)

why does every one of these forums hate tabbed browsing so much
opening notifications in a new tab doesn't ever seem to clear the notifications.

Because web has tried everything to replace app dev, and it still tries to do it from within a document browsing foundation.

Apparently, 6 months ago, my bug report about mobile UX accompanied by a screenshot of desktop on mobile was too much for him and was clearly the last straw; he banned most of the regulars from here that were over on meta.d for a year, and basically told us to fuck off (Discourse) and die.
In a fire.
Since they no longer entertained our bug reports, and were actively hostile, and basically told us to find other software, we did.

@PJH One thing Discourse had and NodeBB is severly lacking is you having an avatar (thats not just the letter P)!
Filed Under: I should start a forum petition to get you to upload a new avatar it seems!

But it's a real letter P, not an image served from a CDN!

How about the Community Server one? (Or one similar to it..)
-
@PJH Not the balls I was looking for but it'll do for now :D
Filed Under: It's missing the hat, though

Better?
Filed under: Aww, NodeBB can't handle SVG pasting :'(

What happened to Discourse? It finally got Jeffed.

It seems it also can't handle GIF pasting. Because raisins…

Or GIF uploads (at least animated ones).
Nope, regular GIFs crap out too on upload:
![0_1459117333188_7d238ac9c2e8e690.gif](Uploading 100%)ERROR
Unsupported MIME type: image/gif ).
-
@M_Adams Yes... uploading GIFs isn't supported out of the box because the js-only image manipulation library we use only supports bmp, jpg, and png.
But, if @BenLubar installs the latest imgur plugin, then you can upload gifs again... hopefully.
-
-
@M_Adams Ah, so you're the person who uses APNG! :P

Instead of doing that, I patched the imagemagick plugin to actually work.
-
Yeah, imagemagick works fine as well, and does support gifs... I think.
Just required a boatload of compiled files, but hey, if that works for you
-
@RaceProUK , just trying to see if apng works. Aaaand nope.
BTW @julianlam, @ben_lubar, is this installed:
nodebb-plugin-videoplayer

Why would anyone omit support for that?!
