Fuck synergy and synergies and synergise.
Upsert was a new one I learned today that offended me.

Uh, mind explainifying that one? Only thing I see on it is a combination of INSERT and UPDATE (in SQL) which actually sounds like it could be useful (or problematic) depending on usage.

a combination of INSERT and UPDATE
I think that's the thing. It does an update unless the item doesn't exist, in which case, it inserts it. After which you're sure that there's exactly one record and it has those details.

I coulda sworn there was also an Old New Thing post with that term, but my Google-fu is weak today…

Was in the context of a dataloader but yeah, combination of insert and update. Still an unnecessary term.
-

Unless there were two records to begin with?
Oracle (and, if memory serves, several other engines) call this MERGE. The requisite input SELECT can be a single row from dual.
-
Uh, mind explainifying ["upsert"]?
As it was used by the group we work with, it refers to communicating an update to data in a remote system, by inserting a row containing the new data into a shared communication table. It basically is equivalent to transmission of an update file, except using an SQL intermediary.
If the data hasn't been seen before, the remote system will add it to its structure.

Learning as a noun.

Machine learnings?
-
Learning as a noun.
Worse: Learning as a plural noun. "The key learnings from this project are ..."
-
That sounds like it's straight out of Raymond Chen's "Microspeak" section.
-
I don't know about that, but it's strait out of countless meetings I've attended.

- technology (this one is the worst when used in commercials as every other noun)

You're welcome. Previously discussed here: http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/29038/339717.aspx#339717
And we've actually had a similar thread here in the past:

a) Wow, that's one ugly logo.
b) Is this hosted on some free VPS, or what? It manages to be slower than Discourse, and that's a feat.

@blakeyrat's hosting it on an Amazon EC2 instance
Oh hey, so that actually happened. And worked.
Well can't blame him for not throwing away more money...

Revert back to me.
I have disturbing connotations with vomiting when hearing things like this.

Leverage and synergy are obsolete. (Thanks gods of philology!)
"Freemium" is one of my favourites lately.
"Web Scale" is another.
"Internet of Things" bugs me, too. Also, anything from hipstery lexicons in some areas: startup, founder, co-* (co-founder, co-anything, really), smoothie, lifehack, kickstarting, disruption, co-working (the facility thing). Not the words per se, but their abundance when a hipster type with an "idea" and a "vision" is trying to splurt a sentence.

Worse is when they're trying to tell you that they've done the hard work in having the idea, and all you need to do is just implement it and you can duplicate Facebook in a few days work. But that's another rant than the ones that belong in this topic…
-
I think the last imbecile who couldn't get the idea that Facebook is a real complex bitch has died already. The things being cloned are smaller scale, but what's now trendy is ideas that are totally useless, mostly in an unfunny way.
Like startups that are rising on the wave of hype to be sold for lots of cash before the buyer even tries to understand what the fuck did he just buy.

b) Choke on a thousand dicks. Is there some contagion that swoops down on people who host forum sites that makes them mean and abusive? ;)
I mean maybe Jeff needs medical treatment instead of scorn, and we should stop Blakey before he hosts the archive for very much longer... for his own good...
Also, I am very impressed that you brought the archive up so quickly and smoothly. Way to get things done, dude.

Yes; that's called "not being an incompetent dumbfuck".

One I keep hearing in a radio ad:

Is there some contagion that swoops down on people who host forum sites that makes them mean and abusive?
@apapadimoulis isn't mean or abusive…
-
-
-
No, that's @blakeyrat. I can see how you would get them confused as one hosts The Daily WTF Forums and the other hosts The Daily WTF Forums.
-
Yeah, but @apapadimoulis still expresses his attitude towards Linux occasionally:
@apapadimoulis said:Rebuilt! And now emails working.
I also now just set mandrill to allow requests from this IP. There's a chance that was the problem this whole time.
I still blame Linux.

Yeah, but @apapadimoulis still expresses his attitude towards Linux occasionally:
i read that more as playful teasing than actual real hatred...

…eh, it seems I need to work on my joke telling…
