In which blakey doesn't ask for help with reducing notifications
-
I'd rather people not make the tired old shitty Monty Python jokes we've all heard 347,000 times already at all. But if they do have to make them, at least do it somewhere I don't get fucking notified that you're all humorless assclowns.
-
Does forking this topic count as innovation?

…and that'll stop the notifications ;) Well, unless someone replies, quotes, or @mentions you, obviously.
-
But it's his topic.
-
But it's his topic.
True, but I set that on topics I create, and I don't get a notification every time someone posts to it ;)…and I feel another Jeffing may be in order… to Meta this time…
-
…and that'll stop the notifications
Then I won't get notified if someone actually is trying to communicate with me. You know, the reason the notifications exist?
The problem here is that since the forum's full of assholes like you, my signal-noise ratio on notifications is extremely low. I see the blue circle, I'm like, "oh good someone's posting to me" and it's some garbage recycled tripe joke from 1975.

OK, so you're not talking about notifications at all…

THE THING THAT APPEARS WHERE THE CARTOON SPEECH BUBBLE FUCKING IS if those aren't called notifications, then whatever their actual name is. Pantaloons. Quibbles. Frognostigators. What-the-fuck-ever.
THOSE THINGS.

So as I said before, set the thread to Tracking, and you'll only get them if someone replies to your post, quotes you, or @mentions you.

I have a better idea: how about you fuck off to another forum and stop posting bullshit here?
-
That works for every thread I've created.
If you're not willing to use the features this forum provides for you, then you only have yourself to blame.
-
He didn't ask for help.
-
And that is an excuse for being a bullish dickhead, why?

This post is deleted!

Look. It's my thread. I want to be notified when people post to my thread, on the assumption that they're trying to interact with me in some way. Right? Right.
Now with your proposal, switching it to "Tracking", I only get notified if someone does the at-mention thing (and BTW people doing at-mentions when they're just referring to me as an example and not actually trying to communicate to me is ANOTHER issue I constantly have here and why I don't use at-mentions myself) or if someone replies directly to one of my posts. Right? Right.
But I do not get them when someone replies to the thread itself. Which is what I want. So I can't change it. Even worse, if I set all these threads to "Tracking" I have no way to tell apart my threads from other threads I just happen to be tracking, except my own fragile human memory, which sucks.
Look, I'm sorry that Discourse is shitty. You're stuck with it, I'm stuck with it. But it certainly doesn't help anything to have it full of all this worthless shit. Regurgitating jokes from the 1970s is not entertaining, it's not insightful, it's not useful, it's a fucking waste of space. And me getting notifications for that bullshit makes me angry. I think it'd make any sensible person angry.
-
Great. The funny thing about that post is completely gone now.
-
OK, now I understand your issue. And the solution is simple: flag for Jeffing.
IIRC, the next update will allow TL4s to see those flags, so you won't necessarily have to wait for @boomzilla to not do his job ;)
-

That's stupid. You're the OP, sure, but there are other people talking there. Are they only supposed to be allowed to reply to you?
Regurgitating jokes from the 1970s is not entertaining,
It's soooo much more entertaining than the awful web comics you post.
And me getting notifications for that bullshit makes me angry. I think it'd make any sensible person angry.
So turn off the fucking notifications. You bitching because you refuse to help yourself just makes you look stupid.
-

I don't know that anything has been scheduled on that, but the idea was favorably received.

i doubt that'll be next release but apparently the ability to mute users is coming so blakey can mute troublemakers like @accalia, @RaceProUK and @boomzilla and prevent us from generating unwanted notifications (or at least prevent most of the unwanted notifications)
so that should help, right? he'd actually use that feature to make his life easier right? right?
-

He just shares Jeff's opinion that posting slightly off-topic things should not be allowed. Ironic eh?
-
Does forking this topic count as innovation?
Depends. is it running on Linux Hardware?
-
It's soooo much more entertaining than the awful web comics you post.
But... but... Nedroid...

If my problem is Discourse notifications the logical solution seems to be removing Discourse.

Then you won't get any notifications, which will certainly help you reduce the number of them you receive.

(and other stuff)
What you're asking is impossible. Software can't decide whether you'll like what someone has to say to you or not. You can disable notifications and get the same experience like on a different forum.
That said, on my threads I usually keep notifications while discussion is on topic, and then switch to "Tracking" once bullshit starts. No need to make a big drama about it.

That would be two replies down?

Because you're an idiot?

Depends; has the thread been visited by a fox or a hedgehog? In all seriousness, I do try not to derail topics too much; a lot of the time, I'm just going with the flow ;)

...which is the way that all normal casual conversations go, as is understood by most.
Kudos to Discourse for making it so easy to mimic this pattern in writing.
-
which is the way that all normal casual conversations go
QFT.Which always makes me wonder why forum threads are treated (by some) as if they have to rigidly stick to a topic at the cost of human (and other) nature…

-
Look guys, FOR THE BILLIONTH TIME, I do not care if threads go off-topic (generally). I care that I get notifications and when I visit them it's useless unfunny bullshit that wastes my time.
-
And how would changing that work?
Posts needing to be approved? People getting banned? Moderation escalating (which it already does)?
-
So what we need is a discourse checkbox "don't notify OP" when making new posts?
Why don't you propse that to @sam and help him out with beta testing it.
-
How about people just not post tedious unfunny shit at all?
-
That's not a valid answer.
-
Apparently not. But a man can dream.
-

Not required; that's what the thread tracking setting is for ;)

Short of developing a BlakeyAI (scary!)…
-
How about people just not post tedious unfunny shit at all?
So… you're going to stop posting stupid, supposedly funny rants?
-
I care that I get notifications and when I visit them it's useless unfunny bullshit that wastes my time.
But you don't care enough to do anything about the problem. Which means no one else cares very much about the problem either.
-
But they're full of wisdom.
Moron.
-

You don't like what people are posting, therefore Discourse is broken? Ok, got it.
-
But
theirthey're full of wisdom.Moron.Dammit. Now that you corrected your grammar, your post is only half as funny as it was before.

It was an AOSPo.

That's Blakeywang! ;)

Haha hilarious, pile-on everybody. Pile-on about my legitimate problem with the UI here.

It's not a UI problem. It's a people problem. You've been told a way to make it work better for you but you refuse to do it because you really just want to bitch and complain (I'm assuming...it's the most plausible explanation I can come up with).
everybody
Have you considered that the problem is...you?
