The Daily WTF Wants Writers...Again!
-
.... /facepalm
i am TRWTF. i own signed editions of those books and i didn't recognize that!
-
@algorythmics, et.al. I give my permission to hanzoize that to [afterlife: bad end] and back!
I may just have to try that later. Haven't done too much creative writing in years, put it aside when I 'grew up' and it needs to stretch its wings again.

Would you like a whoosh badge?
-
that would certainly qualify as a point i deserved it.
still not going to ask for it. I'll leave it to the community to judge when i've earned it.
-
TRWTF is 300-500 what? words? letter? paragraphs? pages?
It said "length", so it's clearly metres.
-
I flagged it, hopefully it will be enough.
-
you are too kind fair and kind sir for nominating this unworthy one for such an honour.
-
You spammed more than I did, you're totally worthy.
-
I'll leave it to the community to judge when i've earned it.
Speaking pendantically it's meta enough you probably shouldn't but I flagged you anyway because by damn SOMEONE needs one of these badges.
Now if people would just flag for pendantry, but that seems like a pendentious topic.
-
Whoosh badges are out there. I myself hold two.
-

Yes, but tdwtf.com's owned by an American, so it should be in rods or fathoms.
-
Now if people would just flag for pendantry
can i really call it pedantry when you are actively trying to be pedantic?
-
what about parsecs?
-
still not going to ask for it. I'll leave it to the community to judge when i've earned it.
-

I know, but I was speaking more loosely. People are stingy with the pendantry flagging.
-
i own signed editions of those books and i didn't recognize that!
Then could you explain to those of us that don't get it?
-
oh dear.....
that can't be good.
I can see that evil sparkle in his eye.....
-
can i really call it pedantry when you are actively trying to be pedantic?
I'd say yes: "a person who is excessively concerned with minor details and rules or with displaying academic learning."
You can troll pedantically and still actually be pedantic.
-
Then could you explain to those of us that don't get it?
and ruin the joke?
it's our joke! our precious joke.... precious.... ours! <mutter mutter>
-
Then could you explain to those of us that don't get it?
The Lord of the Rings - has 20 rings.
-
and with that the joke flatlined
-
what about parsecs?
Those are slightly less rare, and also not ambiguous ("Formerly, the term [fathom] was used for any of several units of length varying around 5–5 1⁄2 feet (1.5–1.7 m).")
-
The Lord of the Rings - has 20 rings.
Ah, I can never remember how many dwarven and elven rings there are.
-
and with that the joke flatlined
The joke only really worked the first time... there was as much material to go with as there was in the OP's Apple ad for an article...
-
Three for the elven lords, seven for the dwarves, nine for mortal men and the One Ring.
-
Formerly, the term [fathom] was used for any of several units of length varying around 5–5 1⁄2 feet (1.5–1.7 m).
My understanding is that it was something like an arms span. "Mark, twain!"
-
My understanding is that it was something like an arms span.
Yeah, I figured people who cared could go visit wikipedia. Blah blah blah, comes from an Olde Englishe Worde, etc.
Bonus mini-wtf: there's apparently not a standard abbreviation, wp lists several variants.
-
Darn. When you're looking at your posts, the time and "reply" look lighter than your title, but when you edit them all together, the gradient effect vanishes.
-
Three for the elven lords, seven for the dwarves, nine for mortal men and the One Ring
Plus an indeterminate number of lesser rings made by the Elves. The Three are just the ones Sauron gave them
Hanzo: I think the lesser rings may only be mentioned in the Silmarilion though
-
-
Three for the elven lords, seven for the dwarves, nine for mortal men and the One Ring.
Bah, who needs 'em? *is given the One Ring, and then proceeds to chuck it in the reprocessor because it's so darn useless*
To Sauron: "You know that piece of junk ring you gave me? Well, it was worth more after the reprocessor was finished taking it apart at an atomic level."
-
Awesome, thanks. I was getting a... little... concerned that it had gotten lost in the etherwebs. I never trust email to actually get there.
Really? I'm usually 99.999% confident. When a user says they didn't get an email, it's usually their fault.
-
Well... you know I call myself TRWTF for a reason, right?
-
Ok, let me FTFY:
I never trust email **sent from PHP** to actually get there.
-

Mine fucking does!
-
Just sent in my submission. It kind of became Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy based. I'll post it on the forums if anyone's interested
-
I liked it.
-
Thanks. I enjoyed yours too
-
I even gave it a second go...
-
@mark_bowytz from the look of things you have collected quite a few submissions now, do you have any idea of a timeframe those of us who have applied should be expecting to hear back in?
-

A sexy timeframe.
-
Not to put words in Mark's mouth, but this happens on TDWTF time, which is, "We're not going to say, because we honestly don't know."

No, that's Discourse time.

There's been a variety of candidates of modest and better skill... surely it's not that hard to pick one of them?
If in doubt would it be any easier if I just said to pick me because I will pimp my skills out for money?
-
Not everyone who wrote a submission has announced it to the rest of the forum. My guess is there are many more submissions than any of us would expect.
-

I don't think they want just one person, they probably want a gremlins 2 the new batch of several writers.
I also agree with @mott555 there are probably a lot more submissions than have been posted
-

I dunno. This is an atypical community. I would actually be surprised if there are many more submissions than we've heard about - simply because the people that hang around here know the attitude they'll get back from submissions, and need to know about hanging their head high in front of their fellow community members.
And I think anyone that couldn't be bold enough to do that would struggle to cope with what would happen if they ended up being picked.
I know I've certainly been a bit flaky about my own - but that's a non trivial amount of self sabotage and feeling inadequate, but Mark's comments about just manning up... I can deal with that. Heck. I can deal with being TRWTF easily enough
-
Remember the graphs I posted not long ago in the 5% posters thread? 50% of the posts come from 11 people. I wouldn't generalize everyone off the attitudes and posts of the most common posters. There are a lot of lurkers who may not post often but could have contributed submissions.

Thing is, that sort of distribution is not actually that uncommon in forums. There's always a skewing factor of crazy hardcore posters.
I dunno. I'm just getting the impression that it's not many submissions. I do hope I'm wrong about that though.

Hm, I don't know. The contest seems barely advertised outside the forums, so I'm not betting on TDWTF receiving a ton of emails. There were like 4 or 5 submissions posted here, so even if only 1 in 10 people submitted, it still shouldn't take too long to sift through 50 short stories.
Anyway - come on, guys, show us what you've got if you're reading this.
