I was once watching a GTA5 No Damage challenge run on Twitch with ad blocker disabled to support mh favorite Australian streamer. It's usually just one ad at the beginning, but this time it randomly popped up mid-stream, and it caused me to miss the death of the run. Never again, Twitch. Never again.
People who stream or make videos usually have a way to make a small donation. It's a better way to support someone you like (they get a bigger cut, and it's more personal than advertising revenue). And that way, you don't have to let advertisers push their crap to your browser.

Technically true under GDPR.

Wait, why is this build failing saying it can't find the git branch? I'm sure that's the right tag.
...
Oh. Right. Because I punched the build button for a completely different project in a completely different repo. That might explain it.

SPACE IS FUCKING LIMITED AT THE ORIENTATION!

Are they overbooking people or someshit? Can they not to-the-fractional-person estimate expected attendance?
I'm.... concerned... yes, we'll go with that.

Status: Idle puzzlement--anyone have an idea why one of my monitors always takes a lot longer to recover from sleep than the other? Between both systems?
On my work laptop, the internal screen comes on basically instantly. The external takes 10-15s to wake up.
On my desktop, the "primary" monitor comes on instantly, the other one takes 10-15s.
It's not a problem, just something I've wondered about.
-
@Benjamin-Hall some monitors are shittier than others.
-
@Gąska said in The Official Status Thread:

I'd say that both of the ones that take longer are better than the ones that take less time.
The external one's a brand new 4k monitor that came well reviewed; the desktop one is slightly older than its mate, but higher quality. Even if they aren't, they're within epsilon of each other.
-
@Benjamin-Hall Between our previous really old TV, an honestly-not-very-highend-even-when-it-was-recent monitor, and a 4K tv which is 4 years old, I will give you zero guesses before I tell you the 4K tv takes longer to switch between inputs. And it is the only one which won't switch automatically when only one of the inputs is connected to an active video source.
-
In fact, when I turn the 4K tv there is a period of time during which I can't toggle what input to display because it will tell me it's still booting up its software

Likely that's a fault of the "smart" tech, which is basically an entire OS and computer shoved in there. Neither of these are smart in any way. They're just dumb displays. I don't think either one even has speakers in it.

Better is not exclusive to shittier. You should know that....

Fair enough. I was just venting anyway :)
Am I for thinking all this creeping complexity is making technology worse than it used to be?
-
@Benjamin-Hall the more advanced image processing, the longer it takes to boot up. Also, maybe the software just plain sucks even if hardware is decent.

Possibly. I might try switching the inputs on the desktop to see if it's the display or the video card. Except there's one big problem.

Only because syndrome. We've had contraptions that could feasibly comparable to modern electronics, if not for scale, but implementers prioritize cost over efficiency.
For example, it should be totally reasonable to have a fucking accurate progress measure of transferred data, yet...
(Yes, that's an Indeterminate-progress progress bar, despite a definite number being displayed directly below it).
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

I wasn't even thinking of that. I was thinking in terms of there being more points of friction/failure. The more complex a system is, the more ways things can go wrong..

Well sure, but the tally of possible break points isn't really a measure of worse-ness.

CRT computer monitors were much simpler, but you had to wait for them to degauss and heat up a bit before you got a correct picture. And -vintage TV sets were even slower. So you win some, you lose some.

I'd say that 3.19GB of 1.37GB and 1.93TB of 1.72TB both feel like stuff is well into indeterminate territory; the limits have been breached, so where we're going… nobody knows, least of all the software!

The information is itself incorrect; this is an internet transfer, and there's no way it transferred nearly 2 TiB of data in the few minutes it took to get that screenshot...
However, the 73% is accurate, and could have been used for the progress bar value.
But the point is, even if the apparent values were "correct", the progress bar is always indeterminate, so I guess it's just a "we're putting up an animated throbber so you can feel good"?

Taking the screenshot took seconds. Getting to the mentioned screen a bit longer. Realizing I wanted to get to that screen.... well...

I live in a flat in a row of houses-sort-of-converted-to-flats. For my immediate vicinity, I have neighbours above, to either side and below.
Upstairs, downstairs and street number + 1 are all independently doing DIY with hammers and some kind of devices that could be axle grinders or electric sanders.
I'm so glad I was already awake before they started.

Random name created to test joins. The table is just two int columns.
